You'd think that we'd have made more progress on fuel economy in 30 years.

We have made a good bit. We now make the same gas mileage, but with 4 times the power. lol.

Compare that to the numbers on the '09 Nissan Versa FE, which manages just 28/34 MPG.

Of course, that comparison isn't really fair, since the EPA used to run the "highway" test at a much lower speed, plus the Versa has all manner of safety gear and luxury accessories that 210 owners only dreamed about. Still, you'd think that we'd have made more progress on fuel economy in 30 years, no?

Keep in mind, the biggest difference is that those older cars were a lot lighter. Newer cars are required to be more "safe" and therefore weigh more.

Above is the excuse the auto industry uses to justify their kickbacks from the oil industry to keep gas mileage down.

It's all a bunch of BS.

In 79 I drove from cali to mass(and back) in a Honda DX, we averaged 64 miles to the gallon. It was a great trip, almost 4 months long and saw most of the USA. We ignored the speed limit and the recommended speed given by Honda for best mileage. The car was listed as having 48 city to 54 Highway MPG.

Agreed. And I'm no "conspirator oriented person" lol.

One of my first cars was a 79 Datsun 210 Wagon. I eventually entered it into a compact car demo derby and lost.
