View Full Version : Some fun against a Turbo Integra

A friend has a friend with a Turbo, full exhaust, full suspension, and ITR tranny, Integra LS. He had been a lot of talk for a long time, before he had the turbo the rest of his mods were the same and I had my SHO, he said he beat them. I had beaten another friends Teg GSR with H/C/I and full suspension and I told him that and he didn't say much, but wouldnt race.
So now he picked up the turbo and was a lot of talk, but would finally race, in the end I had fun, was nice to see a pretty quick Honda out too, really not many around here. Anyways, these are 2 of the runs, I'm gonna make a mix up of all we got in, anyone got a good program they suggest for doing this?
I'm not sure why he was so far back here, so I hit the gas after hit to give him a bit of a jump.

No downshift at 40 here, so I started at like 3000rpms :/

How is that pretty fast? You left him behind in the end both times.
... and he's probably put more into it by now than he paid for the car!

Again, that supercharger is so damn strong on the top end. I think that I could hang with you in my rustang till about 80, then it would be curtains for me.

I'm a pretty nice guy, didn't want to toss it in his face. But my car should be a 13.5's car so that prob puts him 14.5 - 15, so bolt on GSR territory, but yeah he has a bit into the car since he bought all those parts himself, granted I think he got a steal on the turbo kit.
I wish we could have got some launch races, but he has bald tires and launched like crap each time. And the races were all pretty consistent with me owning him, so we called it quits after a bit.

I really didn't expect to pull him up top which is weird, 3800's aren't known for top end. I think after the launch you could prob stick with me for sure. I really need a pulley drop. Tax season it's getting an IC, TB, MAF, and a 3.0" pulley (mines 3.8 which the 3.0 will bring me from 7psi to 15psi) And nice thing is that will round off everything but a rotating assembly for my car and a tranny, and those parts should cost me less than 1k and drop me a full second or more and add a good 60whp or more for cheap. Could go to a lower pulley if I wanted to put the tranny into retirement, so if I decide to keep it after that, will need a trans.

Meh. For the money he spent on turboing an LS and bolting up an ITR tranny, he should've just built a B18 vtec motor. Integras and Civics can be made much faster than that for dirt cheap if you do things in the right order.

I agree, plus the ITR tranny with boost isn't the best idea. I am not sure if he planned on boosting it at any point, but I think he found the kit for $1000 so he just ended up picking it up. I'm not sure why, but all of my friends friends (thats who this integra owner was a friend of a friend) all like the LS tegs. He has like 3 friends with them, all with full suspension and not much under the hood, really puzzles me.
I was expecting to beat the guy, but really not this bad, he was expecting to beat me, all he did was shrug though and I could see he was really nervous after a few runs.

I can see the allure of buying an LS teg. They are way cheaper than their GSR brethren. I cannot, however, see the allure of building the LS motor, unless you do a built LS-Vtec.

For sure they are cheaper, but to buy one then brag about how fast it is is the strange thing. Like I said before the turbo he had full exhaust and was claiming to have beaten SHO's, but wouldn't race me. Also to buy one then swap an ITR trans, prob didn't save all that much.

Probably not.
For what he spent on that car, I could've built one that at least kept up with you, if not flat out won.
Still a lot of dumb import owners out there.

You could have built one that wasnt gutted to keep up? Buying price on Hondas is unreal, I'm not sure what he has spent on the car, but probably more than I spent on mine, granted mine came with everything on it so that was a huge saving of cash, so I guess it could be possible.
I'm sure it would be possible to find a teg that could run with my car for the price I spent on mine since modded cars just cant go for what the parts cost :( Either way $1000 next year and I'll be seeing 12's I hope, will be sweet.
Also anyone got a recommendation on a good video editing program? Got a few clips more I would like to toss in and be able to put in some frames with mods for each car and the setup of each race.

Sure. Hondas don't hold their value that much. First, I wouldn't start with a Teg anyway. I'd start with the cheaper Civic. Then, considering I'm a drag racing nut, all my money would be spent on engine and brakes. B16's are a dime a dozen, and cheap to build. Handling could wait.

Up here Honda's, especially Civics are very high priced. Really all Honda's are, I bought my old 91 Accord 5speed that had a decent amount of damage on it and 177k for $850, but usually a few times a week you can spot early 90's Accords with 220k+ miles going for $1500 - $2000 :/ Base mid 90's Civics are usually $2500 - $3000. I'm not sure if it's the same eslewhere, but it literally is just too expensive here to consider using one for a build.
I'm not sure about B16's though, a few years back when my SHO had a fubar'd tranny I ran across a Civic hatch, it had some rust on it and no fart can, but rims, I tossed them a rev for shits and giggles. And they bit, it surprised me, it was pretty darn quick, but I still pulled it pretty well from 25 - 85 by about 2 cars. Ended up talking with the guy and he was really cool. It had a B16 swap, MAF, Cam, TB, Tune, Header, DP, Catback, Ported Heads, LS Trans, Some clutch. Pretty much everything but boost, they said they beat DSM's and such, but at that time I had a car I spent $700 on and I had to literally shift my trans with 2 hands.
I will admit that Civic actually sounded pretty good though, with no fart can and them saying they shifted at 8500rpms, I was pretty impressed with the sound.

B series motors don't have MAF's. Probably just meant a CAI.
I live in Western PA, and while Cavaliers and Focuses are cheaper for the same amount of mileage, the Civics aren't priced that poorly.

Probably, I don't know a ton about them, but it did sound pretty wicked, so I would assume it did have all boltons plus the cam and such.
But yeah around here Honda's are literally like sitting on a gold mine, I just couldnt justify one for the average going price. To be honest it is easier to find a Teg for a good price over a Civic, I think everyone in MN is still stuck on FF mania or something.

I picked up my 97 Civic w/150k for $2k. The cavaliers from the same period with the same mileage were going for just over $1.5k. I went looking for a car knowing that I absolutely had to have a manual transmission, needed something daily-driver reliable, and wanted to stay in the compact range. The choice was simple for me.
Depending on the computer upgrade costs and bills this tax season, a B16 and Integra 4 wheel disc conversion may be on the cards if funds permit. Should be a little more fun, and lays a good foundation for making a quick and reliable daily driver. The bolt-on turbo and suspension would come the following year, then a built bottom and top end the year after, making for a completed car. Looking for around 450HP total on high boost, and maybe 350 for low-boost daily settings.

Would definitely be a fun car, those will be about the flywheel hp figures I will be looking for in 2 years time. This next tax season like I said IC, smaller pulley, TB, MAF, tune. Next one, most likely a tranny, then a 2.5" pulley and be hoping for 380 - 400whp, so 450 - 480 flywheel. And that will about cap out the M90, need to look for turbo to push farther, but I could as the tranny would be safe for skys the limit, and the guy trapping 155+ is still running a completely stock rotating assembly.

well i used to have a 90 integra B18 RS and she was pretty quick...but i still wouldnt expect to beat you unless i did alot more..i mean he modded it nice...but i mean imo he did it all wrong...wrong motor. tranny....not only that...but if i may be honest..if you listen to the race..he doesnt shift correctly. He shifts to shallow.

I think his motor choice was fine with the turbo, but the ITR is def just a wrong choice, he would want to stretch out his gears some more than the ITR allows. He does shift a bit quick, but by the time he even got close to the top of a gear I was already pulling pretty good.
But to be honest, his car has pretty high miles on it, and he ran it pretty hard on the 1st run, my camera man fubared that, got a bunch of footage of the ditch after I pulled on him. He didn't follow their car back, just kept recording into the ditch... After that it was just trying different speeds and messing around, we all knew what the outcome would be.

ya i mean if his engine can take the turbo than i guess its fine..but deff a diff tranny...i mean he shifts shallow but the gears are light as it is ...

I'm more happy I beat that guy :p He was pretty cocky, at least that cars not riced out, so many other Hondas up here invest in looks over performance and somehow those projector headlights make their car faster.
I remember in highschool with my SHO my friend dared me to lock a guy on the freeway. I knew the guy was in my school and knew he was going to my town but he was in the passing lane and the exit was a mile or 2 ahead so I just got along side him. He tried passing me, no go, he tried stopping faster than me, no go. We finally got to 15mph on the freeway and I said f it and took off :p

Hey, I drive a Honda.
But I'm not a cocky honda owner either. I recognize them for what they are. Cheap and reliable. Consequently, they are also cheap to make fast. (If you aren't an idiot, like this turbo Teg guy. lol)

I'd harass you in your SVT as well, not because I think I could win, just because I would want to see you get on it. :D (I'm still a Ford man, deep down)
