If you have the space, it's not that hard to grow poppies with hydroponics. You just have to be patient and willing to put in the time doing the research and then attending to the plants - which mainly just means adjusting the type and amount of light as they mature as well as the nutrient mix.

The problem is that very few people have the patience to do that. Also, if you're ever caught, you can be charged with manufacture of a schedule 1 or 2 narcotic. That means they can seize your house and a good chunk of your personal property as being related to the illegal operation.

In fact, it's still technically illegal to even grow any poppy that produces opiates. It's pretty rare to hear about anyone getting busted though because for the most part people don't distinguish between different types of opium poppies and those that are purely ornamental.

There's no need to grow them because they grow wild in many median strips all over the US. A good friend of mine from Florida worked for the City of Ft. Lauderdale and tended crops of poppies which he harvested :p. No one even knew what they were...but he did. He would scratch them and make the pods weep...which is what gives them potency...the fluid...then harvest them and dry them and snip up the pods and smoke that like weed when weed was scarce.
