I'm a journalism/geo major, and want to get into the travel/tourism promotion industry, and if not that, work for a paper or something of that sort.
On that note, I'd like to hear some recommendations as to where good places would be to look after I graduate.
I'm looking into the Twin Cities (would particularly like to hear more about here, I've been exploring places on Google street view and it's awesome!), Chicago, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Duluth, among other places.

Probably the safest bet in this economy is a state tourism board. You won't make much money but you should be able to get some good experience.
Travel and tourism is sucking the big one right now. I saw some of the prices cruise lines are offering and I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper to live on a cruise ship right now that pay a mortgage.
Being a travel writer will be a tough gig to get. There used to be courier services that would fly you to various destinations as long as you carried a package (something legal of course) to it's foreign destination. That's a good way to travel on the cheap. You can then write about your experiences as a free-lancer and see if you can get anyone to buy your stories.

I wasn't expecting to be travel writing or anything off the block.
However, a state job is what I'll likely end up doing.

youve just graduated - get yourself out the house, go to a tity bar, party all night. find a gal & get laid.
worry about what to do after. youve been driving a desk for the last 2-4years about time you had some R&R.
or my swarm of angry fucked off nymphomatic unikorns looking for a dinner ticket will rape your ears when you sleep

I've not graduated yet... But I'm in a steady relationship and don't need to worry about finding gals at "tity" bars and getting laid :P

My suggestion is to go back to school, get another degree or attain higher than what you have, ie MS/PHD.
Your salary will thank me later.
