At least he knew how to go about it discreetly and turn it into a joke.... our pm would have found fault with his prompters, fault with the media, fault with the writers who commented... then have half the country stick up for him and 'confirm' he did the right thing notwithstanding appearing an idiot...

Discreetly? Mispronouncing a word or two may qualify as discreet but this is PAINFULLY obvious. The man just cant think for himself...or he would not need to read prepared words.
Tech can only mask a lack of quick thinking and the "on your toes" ability world leaders should have. Its like a bandage.

You know, I dislike Obama a great deal, but come on now. ALL Presidents and politicians read from a prepared speech. And anyone is prone to make a mistake doing it. This is just picking nits.

No, I really think you are wrong on this one. If he occasionally used a teleprompter I would cut the guy some slack, but (unless his is on late night talk shows) he always uses them, always.
Presidents have been using teleprompters for more than half a century, but none have relied on them as extensively as Obama has so far.
EDIT: If I were in front of the camera as much as Obama, I would need one too. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/network_newsing/evening_newscasts_have_covered_obama_more_than_bus h_clinton_combined_115055.asp

You're right. They don't all use the teleprompter. Some use index cards. ;)
At any rate, my comment still stands, all politicians use prepared speeches. There's absolutely no reason to target Obama for it specifically.

Index cards for notes, absolutely. Index cards for giving speeches verbatim, no. Never happens.
Wile, you mean to tell me the "great communicator" cant wing it for 10 seconds? I bet you could.
Its no secret that if this would have happened under Bush, SNL and every other media outlet would have made him look like an ape.

Its no secret that if this would have happened under Bush, SNL and every other media outlet would have made him look like an ape.It seemed to be on a somewhat technical speech, so I can see where it would be easy to falter. I might have a hard time winging it speaking on a technical subject. Besides, who the hell cares he messed up reading a speech. I just don't see the big deal. Shit happens. It could happen to anyone.
As far as SNL and such, I think the only reasons they haven't done it to Obama is A) he admitted it like a man, and B) does anybody really pay attention to him anymore as often as he speaks in public? lol. I mean, come on, it's getting a bit old now. I know I'm entirely sick of seeing his face. STFU and just do your damn job already!!!!

I've seen Obama do that about a dozen times already. He usually doesn't say anything, he just stands there like a dumbass for several seconds before continuing. He's the first person I've seen to have constant problems with a teleprompter. I have no idea why.
You're right. They don't all use the teleprompter. Some use index cards. ;)

Some make it a habit to, others perfer more off-the-wall. McCain, for instance, doesn't usually use any teleprompters or scripts. He sometimes has an index card with word-for-word quotes (so he doesn't mis-quote). I think the only time I saw him use a teleprompter was at the RNC.
Then you have some people like George H. W. Bush who constantly used a teleprompter and it became abundantly clear when he strayed from what it said (bad jokes).
As you probably know, the White House has a staff of speech writers (English majors). Bill Clinton often insisted on writing his own speeches completely ignoring their advice.
Every politican goes about things a little different.

I like this Wile E much more than the Wile E I knew back when I was on TPU at the beginning of the year.
I am not the most probama guy anymore, I fell victim to his excellent PR/advertising campaign as well, but still think the guy deserves a break.

Thats not that bad. When it comes to political speeches people are always over technical, here is another good example. You say one word wrong and people blow a fuse, that is why you will see these guys come prepared and if they make a mistake someone will come out after the speech and clear up anything that could have been mistaken by people who are searching for a problem (usually because they don't like that person).
It's just a much different situation than most other public speaking where you can be much more relaxed as people are looking to pick up all of your plans and ideas. It seems now days people don't look for the good plans, but as soon as one little mistake pops up they will stop and rant about that for hours instead of stopping, using some common sense, and realizing what he did mean.

Very, very true. Every single day he's in the news for one thing or another. Give me a ****in' break. We have North Korea continuing a nuclear weapon reasearch program. We are in the deepest recession in the last 50 years. Oil prices have begun to rise again and WTF are we gonna do when it hits $200/barrel? Corporations that were the staple of the 20th century are folding left and right. Unemployment is up. The list goes on and on and all the press can talk about is how Obama looks with his shirt off. WTF!?!
The GOP ads of Obama == celebrity comes to mind.

How much press coverage did Jimmy Carter get when he was in Lebanon overseeing the voting process a few days ago? Five minutes? Those five minutes of Jimmy Carter will effect our future in the next 10 years (at least) far more than the two hour long NBC special of the Obama White House. Some...demographic...doesn't have their priorities straight.
For being the "President of the Free World," he doesn't act very Presidential. The Press Secretary is supposed to keep the Presidents interactions with the Press to a minimum. That's why tax payers are paying for a Press Secretary, no? Every word the President says must be filtered because one wrong step (e.g. that Islam/Judaism speech) can have 1/6th of the world furious at you, and by association, us.
What if Obama's poor word choice (which has already strained the Israeli/USA relationship) triggers a war in the Middle East? What if he decides Israel isn't worth saving? What if the Holocaust has a part two on Obama's watch?
No matter; once oil prices start to climb, we won't be able to afford a war--even amongst ourselves.

I agree that should have never been established. All it accomplished is make Muslims pissed at the West and make most of the Jewish community flock to one area of the world meaning a second Holocaust is that much easier to carry out. It was a stupid strategic move.
But now, I think we need to do all we can to prevent the extinction of a culture. If that means relocating them then relocate them. They won't like it because they feel that land was "given" to them but so do 1.5 billion Muslims.

I don't know what to make of that. Sleep deprivation makes some sense (his excuse) but stumbling that bad for that long is not excusable. Hell, if McCain gave a speech like that (my favorite politician), I couldn't vote for him. I'd think he was coming down with Alzheimer's or something.

But what makes the Bible any more true than their holy book, which has equal claims on the area? I've read the Qu'ran, and it's nothing like the fanaticism Islam is made out to be.
But religious importance aside, the land was held by the Muslims at the time, and we, the western world had no place establishing a country for their mortal enemies to live in prosperity and try to boss the rest around from.
Think of all the lives that would have not been lost had we not established Israel. Religion doesn't matter, and I hate to tell you this, but it's something constructed by man to explain things that were previously unexplainable. Something used for population control and establishing rule. It developed into something nations could identify with, something I find, in general, to be a hindrance to a state's international AND social relations at home and abroad. Such things are what help to breed fervent extremist groups that fly planes into towers and the likes. Whether you're a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, or any other, you're just as wrong as the next guy when you roll tanks through another country.
I have nothing against the Jewish people and I just hope they get their heads out of their ass, swallow their pride, and realize they are not wanted where they are.

Well, believe what you will, but I believe most of what the bible has to say. When we start meddling in the affairs of Israel, it will mark the beggining of the end.
In my opinion, we need not be involved at all. No sides should be taken, and they should hash it out themselves.
But if we must be involved, I side with Israel.

Paganism predates Mythology predates Judaism predates Christianity predates Islam. In my opinion, they're all wrong but that is my belief. They are different versions of the same story passed from generation to generation. They all started as what we would call a cult but the cult came to power and thusly, became "right" and subsequently, an established religion.
In any case, the Bible is considered a historical reference. A lot of the locations and events it discusses about can be confirmed through other sources (Roman archives, geology, etc.). Of course, there is a lot of riffraff to filter through.
