Well, after the factory CD player finally kicked the bucket, I decided it was high-time to toss in a new head unit to match the speakers I currently run:

Pioneer FH-P800BT (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/In-Dash/CD-Players/Premier/FH-P800BT)

little bit of a buggar installing a 2-DIN unit into a factory 1.5-DIN slot, but with some fancy hacking and slashing, got 'er to fit just fine . . .

So, my car's audio system is now 100% Pioneer, and has never sounded any better!

Yeah. Pioneer is my favorite head unit in bang-for-buck. Alpine and Eclipse are my preferred unit for money-is-no-object.

I have a Pioneer DEH-5000UB http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/In-Dash/CD-Players/DEH-P5000UB

I've always loved Pioneer's equipment - TBH, for what they charge, it's some of the best sounding, best quality and best constructed audio equipment on the market . . . and you don't have to sell the children to afford it.

This makes my 4th Pioneer head unit - every car I've owned has gotten one sooner or later :D

Pioneer head units are awesome. I had an oldie I brought back to life that was sitting on a shelf for two years. Powered on in a heartbeat.

Retrospect install:

Dual 12" MTX 5000 with a 500W MTX Roadthunder amp. Bumped that for a minute

Had a single 12" in my Nissan pickup(not extended cab) with a noname 400W amp. That sucker brought the bass!!

I'm out of the custom audio loop and might as well have been retired. I'll give my son pointers when he goes to install his first CD player though.

I have a Kenwood 180W cd player pumping two alpine 5.25's up front and two 5.25 pioneer's in the back. For such small speakers, they pack a PUNCH, enough to rattle my door panels.

I have this wicked system, says nothing on the front but its all molded plastic. Matches the dashboard of my '97 Explorer perfectly. Its got um, AM/FM and a tape deck (fuck yeah amirite?). I think it came with the vehicle off the assembly line. In fact, I'd be willing to bet money on it.

I'll say from experience, Pionner speakers can produce some awesome sound, and withstand some aggressive punishment . . . again, it's all in the quality of the construction, and the materials they use. The majority of their 3-way+ speakers use excellent materials.

Currently, my front are 3-way 6x4, partnered with 1.75" tweeters towards the top of the door - the rear are 4-way 6x9 driven by a Pioneer 300W amp (which I probably don't need anymore with this new head unit . . . the factory unit didn't have enough power to drive those speakers).

Either way, the bastard not only hits great, but has a ton of volume to it - I'm starting to entertain the thought of throwing a couple of 12" subs in the back, and installing this other set of 3-way 6x9s into the rear doors . . . I don't really need to, my current setup produces great across the whole freq range . . .

Oh, and I'm loving this new head unit more and more - it's a little complicated at first, but is fairly intuitive once you get used to it . . . plus, the LCD display which will display artist/album/track title and all, it also displays Russian, too :D

Yep. The Pioneer and Alpines are both quality brands. I have some sony's that are the same size and they sound like crap compared to them. My headunit is a KDC-222, just found that out today.

Just switched out. I am now using a Pioneer DEH-1100MP head unit. 200W, plays Mp3 cd's and WMA's, has a remote and an AUX input on the front. Nice little unit and it was only $97.

Alpine IVA-D310RB headunit/screen to an AudioControl DQT digital equalizer then to a DLS A7 amp which powers the front and rear DLS speakers(front- UR5i / rear- R1070) and a 12" DLS X-12 sub.
Also alot of sound proofing in the doors and boot and some custom made speaker/crossover pods for the doors and A-pillars.
This was all done a few years ago as I have not got the time for it now :(

I'm excited to try the Passat's sound. It looks good, can't wait to go pick it up.
