View Full Version : Have I found a diamond?

Lol seriously I was walking on the side-walk and saw this tiny sparkle. What made me pick it up was that it sparkled much brighter than a normal piece of broken glass.
Well, it's shaped like a diamond... Now I know zilch about diamonds or precious stones. I don't even own any so that I can compare!
The type is certain it came from some jewellery, but it could just be a cheap piece of glass.
So I started googling how to recognise diamonds...
I put this stone on my mirror and dragged it - it made a creaky noise and scratched the glass
I also read that diamonds don't fog up if you breathe on them. I didn't see mine fogging up...
Also, that diamonds just sparkle and don't give rainbow spectrum... and mine just sparkles...
Could today have been my lucky day?
Seriously, apart from diamond - could I have found something worth money??
(I'm charging my camera to upload a photo)
Here's the photos - the screw is from the back of my pc case for size comparison.

If it scratched glass, then it's a diamond, a CZ definitely wont. Also, look at it with a magnifying glass and see if there is a spec of coal in it, it will be small, but there. It looks like it's about 1ct. You need to take it to the jeweler and make sure that it's not laser marked, and ask them if it's a real diamond. If it's not tagged, I would say that it's all yours.

take the biggest hammer you can find and smash it. if it's diamond it won't shatter. if it breaks it was worthless anyway

A real diamond that size will shatter if you use a big hammer. Its hardness has little to do with its brittleness.
A diamond is 58 times harder than the next hardest mineral on earth, corundum, from which rubies and sapphires are formed. It was only during the 15th century that it was discovered that the only way to cut diamonds was with other diamonds. Yet, diamonds are brittle. If you hit one hard with a hammer, it will shatter.

I might....
I don't have high hopes though - I posted the pictures on a diamonds forum and got this reply:

Could be he's just making fun of my ignorance - on wiki, 'leaverite' is a slang term "to identify a specimen in the field that may look interesting but is actually not"
Hmmm, guess I'll just ask this expert which types of 'leaverite' rocks scratch glass :D I'm curious to know anyway...

That guy is just being a smartass. Take it to a shop just to be sure.

Do you see any kind of dirt inside of it? Man made ones are totally clear.

Trust me on one thing, a CZ will not cut glass. I have taken a damned carbon steel knife to glass and it doesn't scratch it. I am real sure that you have a diamond.

Ask a jeweller!
Make sure that he doesn't lie though...

Auction it off. You can tell if it is a diamond by the price it fetches. ;)
It definitely looks like it has been shaped by a jeweler (artificial or not). It looks pretty clear too.

take it to any local jeweler, it will take less than 5 seconds to determine if it's a diamond. They have a little tester and if it beeps it's a diamond, if not, oh well.

More than likely a cubic zirconium. only way to be sure is if you can scratch glass with it.

not sure what happened with this, but if its still up in the air, im pretty sure you guys are wrong about the cutting glass parts. Glass can cut glass, as they are the same hardness. Also, glass is cut with a steel tool, and I know steel is not nearly as hard as glass (not as brittle of course because its malleable)
Def take it to a jewler tho.
heres some more help too, tho im sure youve seen it as its on google
