i found a cheap 93 long bed extended cab 4x4 2500 with the 6.5L TD in it anyone got some input on good/bad/ugly on the truck its amassed some 300K but the block is a crate engine. i will be heading back today to get some pics up of the thing it needs some major body work but i am more worried about front/rear end and tranny on it. the thing was used to haul a gooseneck its whole life so no idea what condition those other parts are in.

any help would be appreciated going to hopefully taking a vehicle like that up to ellsworth, SD with me when i change bases

Chevrolet's from those years are unstoppable. I had an 88 Silverado with the 350. The odometer stopped at 296K miles. Engine was rebuilt once and the tranny was rebuilt once. It was originally owned by an 18 year old kid who got drunk and wrecked it, so it had an 89 front clip on it. Then it spent it's remaining life as a delivery truck for an electrical company where it was abused beyond all comprehension. One guy hit a bump going so fast that it ripped the tool box off the bed.

When I picked it up, it was being used as a dumpster. Once I cleaned it up and put new tires on it, it ran perfectly for the next 3 years.... Believe me when I say that these trucks are unkillable.

Here is what she looked like when I sold her. She had around 320K miles on her.

300k, psh, thats just breaking it in on a diesel. Like JC said, those years, diesel or gas, just unstoppable trucks. My family also had a 90 full size Jimmy police SUV with a 350, original tranny and original motor at 275, but had to sell it as we were starting to run out of jackets to plug the holes in the floor with :( Still ran like a top too, thats the sad thing, the guy who came to pick it up only had 1 ramp for his trailer, so he creeped the one side up, then when the other side tire contacted the trailer, he hoped out, put it in 4x4 and slammed on the gas till it grabbed and yanked itself up.

Then on the other side, it's a truck, body work, and engine work is just so easy on those. Wish cars were that way, I mean heck, up here, cab replacement isn't even a big deal, car unibody goes though, car goes.

18,750/year = short miles

Short miles aren't a good thing (hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold/etc.). 300,000 in a few years, yeah, that's just getting its nose wet.

Thats assuming that it was driven the whole 16 years. Could have been sitting for a while. Could have put a crapload on at first, then very little later.

no go on the pickup front and rear end leak and thats not worth the time or effort to fix....also hearing mixed results on that particular diesel seeing how i unearthed that it was a farm truck used to haul hay its whole life....

starting to look at real dealerships and not side of the road places now anyone have some opinions on the 2005 ford ranger?

Those years of Chevy's didn't have very good differentials on most models. It was very hit or miss.

Go for it. Chevy trucks from that time period are unstoppable.

True.

Truck Trend did a write up on compact trucks like the Ranger. The gist of it is that compact trucks are rarely refreshed (once every 5-10 years) compared to their full size brethren (practically every year); moreover, their not priced much cheaper than their full size breather for a large reduction in capabilities. Generally, it is better to look at a full size truck if only a simple one. Still, as far as I know, the Ranger has been good and a segment leader. Its only real threat is the Toyota Tacoma.

Probably why mine had 4.10's. Sucker was a demon off the line, but by 55MPH it was sucking wind.

Rangers are OK trucks, but I like the S10 better. Dad had a 91 Ranger that had a confirmed 400K miles on the original engine, but it had 3 new transmissions.

Thats short miles? I use to drive a 54 mile round trip to work each day, which is longer than most people drive. And I usually came in around 20k miles a year.

Small trucks may have got better since the past, but all I know is, my friends Range eats transmissions for breakfast, seems like every other year it wants another.

60k+ a year is long miles (~165 miles/day).

That article was written a few months ago (June/July probably) by the editor of Truck Trend.
