I guess this would be a gadget. 100mw or better. Ebay sells diode modules, so at least I've got a start.
I want something that can burn stuff:D Wicked lasers are nice but hella expensive imo.

I'm sure DIY would be better and cheaper.

Thats what my wife said LOOL:D D, you should make one. I know you can mod an air gun, sooo this should be easy.

You tube has some awesome laser vids.

You could always start out using an old DVD burner and turn that into a laser pointer as a start. I'm pretty sure there's a few tutorials that do it step by step.

Looks easy with a diode. Almost too easy with the battery springy thing.

In that case really you just kinda have to make a battery casing.

Make your own toys. Saw this a while back, here (http://hacknmod.com/hack/diy-laser-build-12x-blu-ray-star-trek-phaser/).

Yeah I tried to using this once:

It didn't work too good.

So glad I don't have to buy this from Libyans in parking lots at the mall anymore(toast)

Popping those balloons seems fun. And burning in wood at under 2A is interesting as well, how many amps does it take to burn through flesh at a few meters range?

Good question.
I bet black and brown flesh will burn with a fraction of the amperage needed for a white pasty guy like me.

I like that star trek phaser. I like it a lot in fact. Someone had WAY too much time on their hands. Shocked that no one has made a light saber version yet.

Lasers are interesting. We have a laser engraver at work to engrave things in plastic parts. It uses a red laser.

The closer the part is to the color frequency of the laser, the less effect it has as all of the energy is reflected. I set the thing at full power and tried to engrave a red part and you could not even tell it had been in the machine. Black parts, however, start to burn with half the power.

The unit will engrave plastic and metal, but not wood, which surprised me. I've never tried it with glass, but that is a whole different story. When glass is laser etched it doesn't burn, it causes micro-fractures in the glass.

I am going to have to do more testing.

I think with the right tweaking I should be able to engrave the TPU logo on a hampster.

After I build my Laser, I will strap it to the head of a shark.

i bought 2 lasers years ago from an old aircraft and electronics junk shop in my town called j birketts, they were in a phillips laser disc player the size of a full tower, huckin fuge things that only kicked out about 5 mw and needed a enormous psu/ inverter kit to run them, me and sir real turned them into a crazy light show as they had two magnetic mirrors, which when attached to a speaker output looked quite unique
ahh the good old days of fooling around with extreemly high voltages http://tpucdn.com/forums/images/smilies/laugh.gif

A tech friend of mine used to build all kinds of fun stuff (built his own ultralite out using an old Harley engine, had a rotating flight simulator you could ride, etc.).

He got his hands on an old PSU unit for a CT scanner (1KW output). The last time I talked to him he had everything except a powerful enough vacuum pump for the vacuum chamber for his 1KW laser.

I asked him why he was buiding it. He said, "To burn holes is stuff." lol
