View Full Version : Crazy idea about a new football points system
Right now, we get 0 points for losing, 1 for drawing and 3 for winning but it could be much better because a team losing by 2 or more goals is hardly motivated to score but what if a team could still get a point even losing and what if a team could get more then the points a simple win gives?
Let me explain:
- If a team loses by just up to 2 goals difference, it will get 1 point
- If a team loses by 3 or more goals, it won't get a point
- If a team draws the match, it will get 3 points
- If a team wins the match up to 2 goals difference, it will win 5 points
- If a team wins the match up by 3 or more goals difference, it will win 6 points
IMHO, a points system such as this would encourage teams to try and score goals despite being winning or losing since, depending on the goal difference, they could get extra points.
What do you dudes think?

How? Why would anyone want to settle with 0 points?
Life is like this: Either you win, or you lose. Why should you gain points for losing? And if a team is losing a match and can't motivate itself to continue fighting, it has failed anyway.

totally agree ...I don't like the Idea of a tie either it's like saying your equally as shitty
I made this post quite a while ago: i honestly thought nobody would answer ...

Exactly my point. No team wants to loose but, with this system, even if loosing 3-0, a team would try to score since by losing with 2 goals difference it would get 1 point but with 3 goals down it would get no points.

I got that from Rugby:
The Rugby union bonus points system is a method of deciding table points from a rugby union match. It was implemented in order to encourage attacking play throughout a match, to discourage repetitive goal-kicking, and to reward teams for "coming close" in losing efforts.
* No points are awarded for losing, unless bonus points are involved.
* As few as 4 points, but as many as 7 points (6 points in France—see below), can be awarded to the two teams combined. No team can get more than 5 points in a match.
Under the standard system, points are awarded as follows:
* 4 points for a win.
* 2 points for a draw.
* 1 "bonus" point for scoring 4 tries (or more).
* 1 "bonus" point for losing by 7 points (or fewer).
Just adapted to football.

Disagree: there are ties and there are ties. Which of these two matches would you prefer: Birmingham City - Chelsea (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/premier-league/2009-2010/birmingham-city-chelsea-282975.html) or Chelsea - Everton (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/premier-league/2009-2010/chelsea-everton-282894.html)?
Still, i'll make a small change in my points system:
- If a team loses by just up to 2 goals difference, it will get 1 point
- If a team loses by 3 or more goals, it won't get a point
- If a team draws the match with goals, it will get 3 points but without goals (0-0), it will get 2 points
- If a team wins the match up to 2 goals difference, it will win 5 points
- If a team wins the match up by 3 or more goals difference, it will win 6 points
This system is intended to favor the teams that score and penalize those that only defend and / or are satisfied with a tie.

It still defeats the purpose of losing.
