OK, comments on Avatar, anyone?

I saw it yesterday, in 3d. I tell you, there are not enough acronyms on the internets to describe this movie. Just go see it. Don't download it, there is no way your pathetic TV can do this justice.

Probably going to go see it in 3D tomorrow, can't wait. If it's really good I'll probably get the multi-disc BR set when it comes out, I'd like to see some of the behind the scenes stuff with them creating the animals and worlds.

I rarely buy movies at all, let alone go to the theaters. That said, I've seen this movie 3 times at the theaters, and it still hasn't gotten old. IMO best movie of 2009.

Anyone else like it?

You guys just pushed me over the edge. I'm going tomorrow.
Would it be inappropriate for a FPS playing 10yo?

If the 10yo plays mature games, I don't think there's anything here that ought to disturb him too greatly. The violence is on par w/ LOTR (intense, sometimes mature themes, but generally one dimensional characters and fantastical in nature).

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie in 3D, although w/o that particularly awesome technical aspect of the film I think my enjoyment would have been dramatically lower. Certainly an entertaining flick, certainly an interesting idea, but at it's heart it's really pretty generic (parallels with Native Americans are too drastically overbearing, too many characters lack depth), not likely one that I'll sit through again for some time. As a movie I would watch at home w/ fairly substandard equipment, I'd give it a B-. As a 3D epic seen in a high-quality theater, I'd give it an A-.

"Dances With Aliens."

Well, it's better than Transformers 2, at least.

Just saw. I say that it's easily the best movie that I have ever seen.

Wow, really? People wanted to kill themselves after seeing it because 'Earth isn't like that'?

In the comments one guy says something along the lines of "stop telling people who have suicidal thoughts after watching the movie to 'get a life' and 'grow up', they're just dreamers dreaming of a better future blah blah". I'm not sure if I should be more saddened that people are getting so silly over Space-Pocahontas, or that people are condoning it and not telling them to put down their purses.

James Cameron, shame on you and your stolen script. None of your special 3D effects will ever compensate for the copied, boring, "Hollywood for dummies" story you make.

Ill never see it again, NEVER!

PS: Transformers is sooooo SH**!!!

I watched the movie at day one, and in 3d.

Totally over-rated, the movie effects are cool, but that's about it.
Yup, the effects, that's everything.

Avatar = good effects + a cheap action movie plot.

Global warming + good effects + famous director = huge success.

Best movie of the year? HA! U KIDDING ME!

This movie has been compared to Dances With Wolves way too much! Toward the end I was asking myself if Cameron realized that he had re-written Ferngully, but hey he still has the chops to make an amazing story and a world to immerse viewers in. I definitely loved it. Saw it in 3D too, "it's the only way to fly."

Bah. I hate this whole 3D movement. Hollywood is so focused on making the movies pretty right now, that we get generic shit for plots and characters.

To me the plot was good and the characters were memorable. Not the same quality as The Dark Knight by any means, but it was still an awesome show. I hate the 3d where they go over the top with the ZOMG SOMETHING IS FLYING AT ME crap. May have worked in the 50's, but not now.

Yep memorable. Just like Space Pocahontas should be.

It's called monomyth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth). There are tons of stories that follow it's basic form. So Avatar isn't the first, so what? Doesn't mean it's not a good movie.

He didn't say he hated it, now did he? I disliked the aspect that I could see what would happen 15 minutes ahead of when it happened. I also disliked how many of the characters were relying on generalities and stereotypes to sell the character. The alien language alone sounds pretty Earthy. Not a bad story, just not noteworthy and different.

Having said that, I still enjoyed the movie experience because it was pretty good 3D and an alright story. Won't buy it, won't watch it again in theaters though.

Well, unless he likes Pocahontas...;). I wasn't singling him out or anything, I'm just tired of people saying what other movies it's like.

I've seen it twice now, and I must say, the special effects are already wearing thin. not that I didn't enjoy it the 2nd time, but it was much less of the blast it was the 1st time. that said, I had more time to concentrate on other things. like the colonel.

http://www.cinemaspy.com/img/user/Colonel-Quartich.jpg

this guy is brilliant! the cheesiest character ever, like arnie rambo and van damme all rolled into one, what a fucken hero, I love the colonel, he's got some great terrible lines too!

So yeah the 2nd time in the movie I was looking for mistakes, fuckups, dodgy imagery, didn't notice any. it really is very very well made, full credit there.

Sure, the plot is pretty basic, there is virtually ZERO character development.

I had a couple of issues. When Jake arrives on Pandora Grace seems rather surprised to see him. Remember that he's had 6 years in cryo to get there - you'd think she would know he was coming by then, or at least that his brother was dead? if she doesn't know i reckon that's a flaw in the story. if she does know, fuck woman time to get over it!

and that portable base for the avatar machines, up in the mountains, a bit out of the way don't you reckon? why the hell was that there? a bit convenient.

One last thing, Michelle Rodriguez was totally hot painted up in the war paint flying that helicopter at the end.

Actually, one more last thing. There are sooooo many parallels between this movie and Aliens. Cameron's dirty fingerprints everywhere.

Trudy=Vasquez ?
The warships are very reminiscent

Great movie. Saw in 3d back when it released and the Wife and I enjoyed it completely.

So, after reading about the plot so many times, and not being impressed with what I heard, I finally broke down and watched this movie anyway.

What a total piece of generic, cheesy crap with absolutely no originality in the story or characters, AT ALL. Complete waste of my time. The only good thing about it was the visuals.

Funny, in the gaming world, that would be called a slam dunk. IMO, it wasn't bad. I have seen MUCH MUCH worse. It was best the 3D, but the Bluray is good too.

I don't care how pretty it is tho. I'd rather watch a black and white low def movie with a really good story and characters than a flashy 3D extravaganza with a shitty, mediocre, generic plot line and characters.

I only care how good it looks if I have a choice of a higher quality medium, but it still has to be a good movie. Avatar fails miserably in that respect.
