So i was bullshitting with a friend who said he started eating those premade salads at work and that he has lost weight, about 40lbs since November.
Now at work we work back room and were always throwing boxes around and what not, but i though it funny.
Is there any truth to this?

Well, salads in general are alot less calories than what you could be eating. For instance, if buddy of yours was eating donairs (http://chowtown.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/donair_front_b_sm.jpg) every day and switched to salads. Its the same concept where they tell you to eat celery when on a diet, because celery is actually negative calories (it takes more energy to digest than it gives you in return). Salads aren't quite as good as celery, but compared to what you could be stuffing in your face.
If you have a fairly healthy diet already, you won't notice it as much but its still technically good for you.

It also depends on your friend's starting weight.
Losing 40 lbs is easy for a 300lb guy.
Losing 40 lbs is difficult for a 150lb guy...
Also as Fiendo said his previous diet makes a big difference.
For a person who eats healthy food (and ingests more calories than he can burn) it's more difficult to lose than a person who eats a lot of carbs and fats and suddenly switches to lean meats and salads.

That is why they call it rabbit food.

Fiendo covers the general concept. What you give up by eating salads (besides higher fats and carbs) is protein. It is damn near impossible to "bulk up" being a vegan. Basically what you should do depends on your goals.

If eating salads every day is fine by you, go for it. Spend some time a treadmill too to accerlate weight loss.

An important question is "40 lbs. of what?" If he is just eating salad, then he is losing as much muscle as he is fat. This is BAD. This will end up lowering metabolism and causee rapid weight gain after he goes off the diet. It is very important to continue to get a reasonable amount of protein when on a diet like this. Also, you do need at least a small amount of carbs in the morning and at lunch. Think of your body as a fire. You have to feed it well to burn well.
Here's the best "diet" tip ever, and I use to preach this to my client when I was a personal trainer. Don't ever diet. Just eat moderately, lower fat intake and avoid carbohydrates after 6pm at night. This in combination with regular exercise WILL help you to lose bodyfat without sacrificing muscle, and you'll be able to sustain your weight loss.
People do one of two things to sabotage weight loss. First, they try to find magic from a diet. Second, they over think the process.

ide like to drop back down to 240 at least, considering im estimated 330.
I have muscle below the fat, and its mostly gut fat now, working night crew at target has its benifits mainly that i sweat mostly at night in just a plain jeans and a t-shirt.
I was thinking of going back to the high school deal where we used to run around with sweats on all day long and then excersize during practice, but in this case ide stay in sweats at work all nigh long, for all 9 hours of it or so.
Seem like a good idea?

agree with erocker cut eating lot of junk food and eat healthy food and exercise a lot.
run on the treadmill to keep your heart rate healthy and lose some of the fat quicker, although i hear people say cross trainer is better than treadmill to lose weight is that true??
I go gym 3-4times a week now and i feel great,i started going in september.

Cross trainer burns more calories per minute than the treadmill. I've used both with their own calorie counters (and done some research about it too since I don't fully trust the cal counters on the machines).
The crosstrainer burns like 1 calorie per minute. I could do 2-3 hours jogging on a treadmill with no problem but on the crosstrainer I'd start doing 15 minutes bursts and then after a week manage to do 45min-1 hour bursts.

Well big question is what would be better for the heart?? you do want a healthy heart rating so treadmill would be better choice?? since after you feel knackered while running your heart be pulsing quicker which is good sign? not adrenaline pulse i mean like you need stop to catch breath.

Kurosagi it's different, on the crosstrainer you don't have to stop to catch breath, you stop because the muscles start aching they feel like bursting... The heart rate remains low actually.

yeah i notice that on cross trainer but i am asking what would be better for the heart?? treadmill or cross trainer since the most important is keep the heart healthy.

It's better for the heart the faster it beats during exercise?
I used to think there was some ideal limit, forgot how it's calculated exactly but it's got something with taking your age and multiplying by something and deducting... 20? I'll google it out...
Edit: This (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/target-heart-rate/SM00083) is what I meant.

Lose weight method. Works for everyone:
Aerobic exercise 4 times a week, for 50 minutes each time. That would be full out workin out. Riding a stationary bike full out for example.
Two or three balanced meals a day. No snacks.
Drink a lot of water.
No alcohol.
Not only will you lose weight you will feel awesome. (toast)

Like I said, don't over think the process. Eat reasonably. Smaller portions throughout the day. Not as much carb and high fat crap.
You don't have to get extreme with exercise either. Just get 30-60 minutes per day of some kind of exercise that gets your heart rate up a little. Also, try adding a bit of resistance training. Every bit of muscle you put on will require more energy to sustain it, so you will burn calories and fat more efficiently.

You're wrong here. It will help. You just have to exercise too.

Gotta disagree with a couple of things here. Many people who are out of shape cannot "go all out". You kind of have to define intensity so that people don't give themselves a heart attack or not work hard enough. When it comes to weight loss, people get irrational and go to extremes which can be dangerous.
Two to three meals and no snacks? No. You need 3 small meals per day and a couple of good low cal, high protein snacks per day.
Agree 100% on the water. 6-8 glasses per day, and stay away from high calorie drinks. If you need to drink soda, make them diet.

I would like to add you should control the speed of your weight lose as well...
If you lose weight to quickly you will find that you have to much excess skin and that shit can be painful...
As funny as it sounds when you lose weight quickly, and things begin to loosen up, things like a simple car ride can be horrible..
I know...I know..sounds retarded
but when driving down the road and you hit a bump and your normally solid lump of fat stomach bounces down then up Knocking the wind out of you....you will understand...
And truth be told if I could give up Coca~Cola I would likely lose 5lbs a week

AT 330lbs, I don't suggest the treadmill for him. His knees probably wouldn't like it much. I suggest swimming for cardio. Zero impact, but plenty calories burnt.

Swimming is the best bet. using both your arms and legs. Not much stress on the joints and a high heart rate.

lmao, i know the feeling jmcslob, back in high schil i went from 280 to 220 when i wrestled, and i know the jiggly fat issue :)
im hoping to drop the weight again.
Lately i got ingenuity and ive been using my rifle as an excersise tool, Being a real mans rifle it weighs in at almost 11lsb so ive used it to do squat thrusts, and a range of arm motions i remember from the Academy, and sure enough i can feel the muscle on my shoulders and arms, the flab is going away.
Now only to stay motivated.

Depends on what the weight is. If he is 200lbs of raw muscle eating salads won't do shit. It has more to do with your gene's and how much you excercise. Some people just have a slower metabolism than other's.
Take me and my bro for example I weigh about 60 kilogram and he is about 80 kilogram but I eat alot more than him.

Well, I just lost 30 lbs and you won't believe what the primary reason was for the loss. I switched from regular salt (sodium chloride) to a salt substitute made out of potassium chloride. Sodium chloride is involved in the retention of water. But I am talking about more than loss of water. The USA brand names are No Salt and Nu Salt.
I am also lacto (milk products) vegetarian and it helps health wise to eat lots of salads and steamed vegetables.

If your 300lbs usually you have 30-40lbs of water weight, be careful that your not dehydrated.

You can lose water weight and basically look the same. This was different. I am about 180-185 lbs now and my waistline shrank 2-3 inches. I look different.

I need to sort out some sort of routine, I have 7 months to lose 70lbs. I don't have the money to join a gym. The thing I want is something simple, it doesn't have to be easy but just as long as it's simple.
Besides cutting out the shitty foods I was thinking of going on a power walk for an hour 3 times a week or something and just drinking water, what do you guys think?
I just want to keep it as simple as possible as I'll be finishing school in June and will be studying so I don't want to have to concentrate and put a lot of work into the food I eat.
