Just thought I'd post my mixes that I've posted on YouTube. Only 4 so far, I'm currently putting them out at the rate of 2 a month, should be a new one in a week or so, there will also be a trance mix soon :)

I just wish I could post videos longer than 10 minutes, I prefer longer mixes because you get to let the song play out but with 10 mins you don't get much of a chance.

New mix, [Hardstyle] Headhunterz Mix 2: YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXP6tqInQSA) | SoundCloud (http://soundcloud.com/zeroresonance/headhunterz-mix-2)
I think I might get a SoundCloud Lite account, €29 for a year and I can upload unlimited sets with no time limit. No more 10 minute mixes on YouTube, hour sets :)

Some really good stuff considering the confines of 10min. Surprised at the sound quality of Youtube too, I always avoid streaming sites so I thought it would be like listening to mp3 through a tin can lol. The above linky didn't work :( Would love it if you could provide a collection. Happy to pay you for it too.

Try these: RapidShare (http://rapidshare.com/files/364658642/Zatox_Creation_EP_Mix.mp3.html) | MegaUpload (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OS5SEJAJ) | Uploaded.to (http://ul.to/rkmlry)
Yeah, 10 minutes isn't a lot of time, I try to get a decent number songs in but to do so I have to shorten the play time of them, anything above 6 songs is pushing it lol. I'm using SoundCloud now, I can upload mixes of any length though with the free account I can only have 2 hours of music, I'm really considering buying a Lite account, only €29 for the whole year and can upload unlimited sets, so I can have mini mixes of around 15 minutes to full hour long sets.
I'm just waiting on some money to come through so I can buy a DJ console then I can get started with some real mixes, right now I'm just keeping it simple as I'm only using a mouse lol, I should have some hardware in a few weeks.
What do you mean by providing a collection though?

Yeah they're all mixes. The gear I'm getting is only for mixing, I don't really have plans to make my own music at the moment but I may look at it in the future, I'll most likely do mash-ups once I get the gear though.
On the downside, the studio monitors I'm getting are out of stock until the 30th of April which sucks, I think now I'll buy the DJ console first and hope my PC speakers work with a 1/4" TRS adapter, though on the plus side I now have SoundCloud integration on Facebook lol

Despite my messy new mix and the fact I deleted 3 other mixes to make room for it, I still have an impressive 156 plays this week. When I deleted the other mixes my listen count went down a bit, usually I get around 100 listens per week so this is a nice bump :)

When mixing into a new song, the beat mixing is off slightly at some parts, it kinda sounds like there is a lot going on/more noise than usual if that explains it lol It's kinda like bopbop...bopbop instead of bop...bop...bop lol
And the first song sounds kinda laggy because I had master pitch lock on when I slowed it down to 150BPM, it doesn't sound good when I have the lock on.
theJesus
04-25-2010, 10:41 PM
When you explain it like that, I might have noticed once or twice but thought it might have been intentional, just to change it up for a bit or something. I'm not really sure though. Either way, whatever it was, it wasn't enough to bother me. And I still think you're under-estimating the ability of your PC to fix it.
Still, I liked most of the mix except for some of the vocals, but I can be pretty picky with male vocals lol. And that's not much you can control much anyways, without limiting your song selection.
EDIT: I see it's available for download now, so I'll check it out again in foobar so it gets the same treatment for my speakers as everything else I listen to.
EDIT2: yeah, still didn't notice it lol. and it's only the vocals at the beginning that bothered me, but not much

Well, from other peoples mixes on YouTube that I've heard, people are pretty accepting with mixes on the net, you get good comments even if there's some mistakes.
Though an Irish DJ who recently started mixing again put a video on Facebook and it was utter crap got tons of positive feedback lol it was terrible, backspin on every song and no mixing. He claims he's been DJing for 10 years and played at the biggest clubs. He's a poser, he got professional pictures done of himself posing with cheap DJ headphones on while wearing sunglasses lol
Man, I downloaded some really good songs today, figures, just after I do a mix I get some awesome tracks lol
on my last mix I swapped the audio around, I plugged my headphones into my X-Fi and the speakers into the onboard, much better that way. Stronger kick off the headphones, they didn't work properly with the onboard but the speakers do. :)

I think that's because a lot of people really don't understand what a "mix" is and think it's original content or they just don't pay any attention to how it's mixed and only care what songs are in it. I'm not saying that I'm any better at judging mixes, since I've only recently started paying some attention to various DJs after going to my first rave.
Dude, fuck the X-Fi and get a real audio interface. No offense, but I can't imagine anybody working with a PC for music not having a half-decent interface. Definitely add that to your list, and a nice little midi controller/keyboard too and you'll be able to work a lot more efficiently. For DJing, I doubt you'd benefit from one with a lot of keys, but you should get look into getting one with a lot of knobs and faders/sliders/etc. and especially a set of pads. I know you don't want to do original content yet, but I think you could do some really neat things using the keyboard and sampling bits of music as it's playing, which should be fun and make your work easier. Hell, try even adding some new samples into the mix or experimenting with soft-synths and such.
Sorry, got on a bit of a tangent cuz I love experimental stuff.
Oh, btw, if you get a nice recording interface, then you can make "live" mixes by recording in straight from the CDJ.

I'm only using my X-Fi as it's the soundcard I have in my PC, I didn't get it with intentions of mixing with it lol.
The only way I know how to record from a CDJ is the Rane SL1 and SL3, which are €499 and €749, it also lets you play MP3s to your CDJ. The DJM350 can record mixes too but that's not out yet, I've yet to compare the CDJ350 and DJM350 to the 400 series. They're in the same price range as far as I know. I'll have to have a look around with audio interfaces, The SL1 isn't just for recording so it may not be best to get one just for recording. The other functions do sound handy though.

As far as reworking tracks, you can do a lot of live edits with an Effector to really change a track, I've often felt tracks needed a bit of tweaking but wasn't able to do anything with basic DJ controls, so I'll look into that stuff. The Pioneer EFX1000 is €825 though but you can do a lot with it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOXZXapp80Q&feature=channel).

That video showed exactly the kind of stuff I was talking about doing with a keyboard controller, but way better-suited for it, and probably a hell of a lot easier to use. Doing it the way I was thinking would require some good PC software and manually mapping all the commands and parameters to each of the different MIDI functions. The only benefit you'd get from the keyboard in this situation that the EFX-1000 doesn't offer is the flexibility to control anything that accepts MIDI, which would be pretty much every synthesizer and every piece of software worth using. But you don't need that for this purpose. A keyboard controller by itself would probably be a lot cheaper than the EFX-1000, but you still have to buy expensive software, so I'm voting for the EFX-1000.
Back to the recording, an XFI is certainly one of the better consumer-grade sound cards, so I can understand using it since you already had it. I'm not sure exactly what the RANE stuff offers, but the picture just looks like an interface with the jacks arranged and labeled for DJing. For just recording, the most important things to look for in a simple interface are having the amount of I/O jacks that you need and mic pre-amps if you don't have your own already.
You should definitely take a look around tweakheadz (http://www.tweakheadz.com/) and ask questions in the forums there before making big purchases. For quick comparison of some popular interfaces, look here for firewire (http://www.tweakheadz.com/audio_interface_fw_comparison_chart.htm) (my preference) and here for USB 2.0 (http://www.tweakheadz.com/audio_interface_usb2_comparison_chart.htm).
Also, take my advice with a grain of salt, because you're the DJ here. All I do is mess with soft-synths and samplers/sequencers for fun and occasionally record guitar tracks for friends. I did try guitar and vocals too, but I just plain suck at both. Heck, I don't even make any of my own tracks, because I'm always just experimenting and improvising. All that matters in the end is that you enjoy your mixes and enjoy making them, regardless of how it's done.
Last note, I was a bit harsh on the XFI, but it's still worth getting something else if you're investing in a lot of other gear too.
EDIT @ Wile E: There's always that route, but he at least still needs a nice interface for recording mixes, unless he gets a combo mixer/interface. All the other nifty effects and stuff aren't just from the "digital age," they've been done with analog synths/samplers/etc. for a while. Doing everything digitally just makes things easier and reduces the amount of hardware you need. Of course, now you still get charged an arm and a leg for popular name-brand software, but it's still usually cheaper than hardware equivalents.

Someone I know is also starting DJing, I was competing with him in my mind, but he already has a gig, I think it's something his college is doing though and they're organising an event. It's a lot easier to get somewhere if you know someone, 2 other guys I know DJ, one of them plays at a club I've been to, he does a lot of promotion for them too. And a friend of a friend is a producer I think, he had a big launch party awhile ago and was DJing at a big club. I was pretty envious of him when I saw a picture on Facebook, him on the left and a big crowd on the right, I think the place holds 300 people...I'd do anything for that, not that I can wihout equipment. This sucks, I can either rent equipment for a day which is like €200 or go to my local DJ shop and try the stuff in store, though I don't think I could stay there all day. I can't really practice other than mixing on my PC and that's not good enough.
My next step I guess is buy a premium SoundCloud account so I can upload more mixes and share a mix on more than 1 group and try getting myself more exposure. I was thinking of uploading short videos to YouTube giving a preview and informing people of new mixes and linking to SoundCloud but I don't know what to do video wise.

Today Pioneer and Let's Mix launch Pioneer DJ Network, a social and musical contest platform where DJs all around the world get a chance to test themselves on a global scale.
In its first month, Pioneer DJ Network offers DJs the unique opportunity to compete for a pair of Pioneer CDJ-900s. More Pioneer ProDJ products are under way for coming contests, along with opportunities to spin live DJ gigs. But do make sure to get a shot at these incredible May prizes! To join in, simply upload a mix to the Pioneer DJ Network website here.
DJs that successfully promote themselves and get 50 votes enter the Pioneer DJ Network monthly qualifying pool. From these mixes, Pioneer and Let's Mix representatives will pick a winner and four runner-ups each month. In May, the winning DJ will receive a pair of brand new Pioneer CDJ 900s. In addition to this, 1st to 5th place will be awarded a pair of HDJ-1000 headphones. New competitions will run monthly on Pioneer DJ Network throughout 2010!
Man, I have got a lot of work to do. I'm gonna make a new mix and really do work on it, analyse the tracks and know exactly when to mix another track in, it has to be perfect. That's only half of it, I need to get a lot of votes. I don't know if you have to register or not to vote, but that's a good few people :S I'd do anything to win.
As far as promotion goes, I don't want to post it on Facebook as someone else I know is a DJ and would probably enter, he already has some equipment though. I'll post it on Twitter, I'll ask my friend's in school and my sisters, brother-in-law and see if they can ask other people. I'm probably not going to win, but it's worth a try anyway.
I'll let you guys know when I upload the mix, the guideline is 25-40 minutes so I'll do around 30 mins, like I said previously I downloaded some good new tracks since my last not-so-good mix.

05-13-2010, 03:09 AM
Yeah, I had a feeling this would happen, there's at least 50 people for me to tell but at least half of them wont bother, despite not needing to register or anything. Oh well, the mix isn't even good so I wouldn't have won anything, but I was hoping to get noticed a little as qualified entries have a lot of listens and I was hoping to lead people over to my SoundCloud account.
At the end of the day it's all about numbers, I'm happy when the weekly listens on my SoundCloud account are around 100, it's been low this week (only at 30) so I guess it's time for a new mix, my old mixes are gonna disappear though as I still can't afford a premium account, but they'll reappear once I go premium. I like that, I don't have to delete any tracks and I'm assuming I'll keep all the stats.

New mix up, though because I only had 8 minutes left on my free account it hid older mixes to make up for time, so Hardstyle Remixes and Headhunterz Mix aren't available until I buy a premium account. Shame as the Headhunterz mix was my most popular with over 240 plays, hopefully it will spread awareness to my other mixes.

I'm Italian, so I can't not listen to something called Italian Hardstyle Mix. I will be giving this a listen tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I finish making my sennheiser's comfortable.

Ah crap, I can't upload anymore mixes, it's only when I have time left. I uploaded a 29 min mix with 8 mins left but it hid the others to make up for the 29 minutes, but now I can't upload anything until I go premium :(

So you can't manually hide one to get more time left?

Give Jamendo a shot then I guess. Distribute old mixes via bittorrent there, and delete them from your soundcloud so you can reserve that for new stuff.
edit: and in your torrent descriptions, tell people to check your soundcloud for new mixes

Any feedback on the new mix?
I'm thinking of ideas for mix previews on YouTube, I was thinking of either doing a short preview video for each mix, or 1 video every 3 months or so with previews of the mixes since the last video, just to raise awareness and keep people up to date.

It's been awhile. My SoundCloud is full so I can't upload there for now, so I've resorted to doing what I hate, uploading to YouTube.
