I have no life.
OK?
Let's get that out of the way.
A while ago I was trolling around looking for an anime series that I would like. There were a lot of candidates, but I wanted something that I knew had a long run and was, preferably, still in production. So I came across Bleach. It seemed to have a loyal following, great reviews, yada, yada.
So I got the first few volumes and started watching. There are 4 episodes per volume. After 4 or 5 volumes, I still wasn't seeing the attraction. It just seemed stupid. But I told myself, look, all those fans can't be wrong. Of course the old saying about 10^15 flies not being wrong about eating shit also came to mind, but I ignored the snide, sarcastic 2/3 or my personality and kept watching.
Around volume 11 I must have started getting into it because I freaked when I couldn't find the next couple volumes on usenet. I got the shakes, headaches, heartburn, etc. Thank god someone must have sensed my psychic distress and posted what I needed - without me even asking.
Now I'm up to volume 17 and I can't stop. I sit in my own excrement with frozen food trays piled up everywhere and I don't know what I'm going to do when I run out of episodes.
To quote Rick James - it's a helluva drug.

About 200 more than there should be.
Dragonball with over 500 episodes was very long. Mainly due to the fact that they streched the episodes a bit. A bit too much.
So, anything near 500 episodes is too much for an anime. An bleach currently has 261 episodes, a quick look on wikipedia showed me.
That being said I never watched bleach.

Least it's not like most animes and only has about 7 episodes. (I dont watch animes myself, but both my roommates are nuts for em.)
I would say it probably has 100 less episodes than Sienfeld.

One Piece? I don't even get that anime. MAybe because of the ridiculously lousy German synchronisation, but I guess its not much better in English. I mean look at those guys. They're freaks of nature!
And Naruto has as much to to with Ninjas as DaMulta with a sane person.

Well, I'm up to vol 21 - episode 82 maybe? I'll have to get vols 23-27 I think from Snail-flix. But that only gets me up to ep. 108. After that I'd have to watch english subs. I know the anime purist insist that this is the only way to go, but it drives me nuts. I found one website that claimed to have fan-subbed english audio, but half of the links didn't work. If anyone has any sites/suggestions (preferably serious), I'd appreciate it.
I can always put it on the back burner but then I won't get back to it for several months or more, by which time I don't remember chunks of the plot - especially for something like this where it can get pretty convoluted.
Oh well.

Don't put it on the back burner, just drop it until it's actually finished. it's 90% filler anyway.

Well, it looks like the english dvd's are being released at a rate of one per month so vol 25 drops tomorrow, vol 26 on 3/23, etc. I can probably retain enough of the plot to make it from one month to the next.
I might have to bite the bullet and view one of the several english subbed versions I've dl'ed though although the subtitles don't capture most of the subtleties like the current version.
The series is interesting because it combines ideas from various religions. There is the Mahayana view that there are many alternate dimensions, the Japanese concept of reishi and evil spirits (hollows), elements of christianity (the quincies), etc. Some of the fight scenes are too stereotypically Japanese - with all of the dialogue and posturing - but I'm getting used to it. Love that fastforward button.

Bleach is awesome,
I've watched 259 sub-titled so far
(not good for those with a short attention span) :p
Tri-Gun was awesome too, wish that had continued on :D

I don't. It would've been fucking terrible.
These long running anime like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece and Inuyasha are garbage. They are 90% stupid filler and horribly repetitive themes and plot devices. All of them would have been so much better if they were shorter, and all the eps actually focused on advancing the plot or character development.

It has nothing to do with attention span. It has everything to do with the quality and originality of the story line and character development throughout the series.
The quality of the story and character development steadily declines after a certain point in these long running series, and most of the episodes do not even have anything to do with the actual story line. They are just there to take up time and space, for no good reason.
Read the Manga, and then watch all there is of the Bleach anime, then come back with a straight face and tell me the series is actually good. I can almost guarantee you won't be able to. In fact, most completely drop the anime in favor of the Manga, because it doesn't have all the stupid filler crap in it.
Adding episodes does not mean you are adding quality. Most of the time, the exact opposite is true.

You make a good point, but you can't compare the Manga to the Anime
they are 2 different types of entertainment and everyone will prefer
one or the other. I personally prefer the Anime and even enjoyed the
Bleach Bount/Bakotou filler.
I say attention span because nothing is great 100% of the time,
yet I try to stick with good writers and creative people. While they
may be producing a few not so good episodes, just around
the corner is something great. :D
I don't like Dragonball, Naruto, Inuyasha, FMA, etc...
so for them to end Bleach and start another Naruto type story
doesn't do me any good.
I enjoyed Trigun and haven't seen anything like it since, so
I wouldn't complain about a small span of Trigun that was only so so
because I'm sure there would have been some great episodes to come done
the road if they had kept it going.
Yes story lines change sometimes, but this can be a good thing
as well as a bad thing.
I enjoy reading Stephen King books and The Dark Tower is an awesome
7 book series, but Song of Susannah (IMHO) left something to be desired
yet those of us who were patient were rewarded with series of books that
took over 30 years to complete.
To each his own :)
