LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - British actor Ian McShane, who gained notice Stateside for his villainous role in HBO's "Deadwood," is in talks to play Blackbeard in the fourth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" stars Johnny Depp, reprising his role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and Penelope Cruz, Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways, in a tale revolving around the Fountain of Youth.

Rob Marshall will direct from a script by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot.

Blackbeard, a real-life pirate whose name was Edward Teach, piloted the ship Queen Anne's Revenge. McShane also starred in the short-lived TV series "Kings" and did voice work in "Coraline" and "Kung Fu Panda."
