With all the talking about music quality, media players, etc. in the "What are you doing just now" thread, I thought about making one to discuss your favorite player!

I've been using Foobar2k for more than a year now, and it just works perfectly for me. Sounds great, takes next to no resources, no annoying eye candy, simple, and fully customizable.

Post what you are using here!

+1 Oli. I use Foobar2000 as well. I'm still trying to get a good set up and so far failing at it lol

Foobar2000 with ASIO output plug-in, and a bunch of aditional input plugins, like DVD-Audio (which is how I ripped the 24bit FLACs you see playing). The only choice for hardcore audiophiles.

Windows Media Player 12 and wishing Windows 7 came with Windows Media Player 11. I don't like all the ones I tried (Foobar2000 and Winamp included).

windows media player 11 on windows server 2008 r1 x64 enterprise service pack 2.

on the go I use an 8GB sansa fuze with jvc flats purple and imetal i390 IEMs.

there is a way to downgrade wmp to 11 for use on windows seven.

My own cooked up thing which I never finished. Basically it has a MySQL backend on which I run queries and save playlists in. I used an embedded wmp control for the actual playing.

you should finish that. Make a Skin for it or something. It would keep you out of trouble.

I believe the Linux player Amarok also has MySQL feature similar to that.

Well if it's "on the go" then it's my phone's "Walkman". w995 with an 8GB MS Micro M2. If I want a big headphones I'll put on a Pleomax (a Samsung brand) PHS-5000. If earphones either the one that came with my phone or a Sony one, albeit quite old already.

RealPlayer SP, for its high quality MP3 decoder, Winamp with OpenAL output for FLAC files. If you have an X-Fi sound card and Windows Vista/7, use OpenAL output plugin for better FLAC quality.

I'm not really into player-level organization of music. For me Windows Explorer and its folders / files should be the only music collection organizer. So RealPlayer handles .m3u and .mp3, while Winamp handles .pls and .flac. All folders (albums) with FLAC files have .pls playlist files for one-click play, while .m3u for folders with MP3 files.

realplayer??? lol.

I havent used realplayer since version 10. I have the plus version of that and it was ok, but it had issues.

@dan what kinda trouble you get into that could possibly stall your media players dev?

care to eleborate?

RealPlayer SP works flawless for me. It has a 2-month update cycle, too.

I forbid RealPlayer from being installed on any of my computers. I hate it, hate it, hate it.

media player fight!

I know on server 2008 R2 I had problems with wmp12 crashing on my sansa fuze sync alot. it would get to 90% and then crash. almost every time. must be becuase R2 was hardened for servers and the MTP support is shakier. also some songs would randomly go missing from the playlist on the player and the local m3u file. anyone else on here that used R2 that would care to share?

it also had issues with any playlists over 300 songs. even the x64 bit version.

and not having the tag editor there is lame. I know I can use something else, but I don't care to have another program for that. I want it built in.

and sometimes it would not play some files that wmp11 did just fine. it would display a general error message. must becuase the decoder changed? strange.

That's because WMP12 (Windows 7 and 2008 R2) comes with an old version of Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer 3 decoder that cannot be changed, is over 10 years old, and doesn't support the new-type VBR MP3 files. It also has much lower fidelity.

That was mr lotus saying something silly. I'm just extremely lazy and it's functional so I can't be arsed to add more features and fix some oddities.
It's perfectly legal to write your own things in .NET. It's what it's for.

By "keep you out of trouble" I meant, give him something to do so he wasn't throwing old grannies from windows, or smashing in cars or whatever the Dutch do in their free time. Not get into trouble with the law. (toast)

Licensing issues. They wanted a codec that couldn't encode (for other applications) but only decode.

Maybe that's why I have so many problems with it. In any case, WMP12 is a downgrade, not an upgrade.

ASIO output also does the trick, and gives you bit accurate output. Both Winamp and Foobar should have plugins for it.

I tried ASIO, but ASIO doesn't seem to work in all modes, only in Audio Creation. OpenAL works on all modes.

I run ASIO in Entertainment mode, no problems at all.
