Im looking at getting a smartphone and I like the Android OS but not the price. Which is best? Iphone, or the Droid and Nexus? Please give reasons etc.

Well, the Nexus one has some multi touch issues. From what I can tell, they say its because it uses an older sensor and as such has a tough time differentiating touches especially when they cross axises. I've also seen this blamed on software though, so until its fixed I can't tell you the cause.

The iPhone... I will only say that I personally have no interest in purchasing Apple hardware, as I don't believe it to be jam packed with magic and marshmallows compared to all the other products. It'll have the least features compared to the other two phones listed, I believe both lay a walloping on the iPhone when it comes to specs. In this area, you may wish to wait for the 4th generation which is assuredly in the works. As for the software and hardware bugs, this phone will have the most information on its peculiarities so they'll be relatively easy to research.
I have yet to see anything bad on the Incredible, but this is the phone I'm hoping comes to Canada for my own purposes. Its got the best overall specs, but its probably a little new yet to see if there are any true issues plaguing the phone. I've yet to see any, but in truth I haven't been researching it in the past few weeks.

I will say, the iPhone has the best touch screen I've messed with so far. I like the Android OS better tho, for it's openness. It finally has lots of good apps. I'm waiting for a stable port to the 3GS, and will try it out on my iPhone.
iPhone is still the bang for buck king in the US if you are AT&T, tho. $199 for the 16GB is a good deal. And once Jailbroken, it gains much more functionality than Apple intended.

I heard the Nexus one also had problems with 3G not sure if thats still the case.
Heard the HTC Desire the the bomb.

No offense but iphones are for fan boys. There are some far better htc phones around and android 2.1 is really slick and much better than the os the iphone uses. Apps are not a problem for android either as there are thousands of them available. Imo go for a htc with 2.1 on it and dont bother with the iphone. Newer htc's with allow the use of a 32gb card too so storage is not a problem. For 32gb on a iphone it would cost lots more than a htc plus a 32gb card i reckon.

Its still not going to be better than android.
Just as an example, i read a survey and 75% of iphone users have a apple pc,what does that tell you?

I dont lol and i could argue the touch interface of the iphone is still slicker than the top of the range android devices and easier to use but thats my opinion.

Imo that is the iphones only redeeming feature. Personally i would forgoe that for the better android os on a htc.

iPhones are probably your best choice. Many apps, quite easy to use, and best accessories. I personally hate Apple and perceive it to be fanboyish, but my second choice would be the Android Incredible. Actually that might be my first choice. I'd have to use the Android more to say, as I've only used it once.

I'm still waiting for my Incredible to get here. Hopefully this week. I messed around with it a bunch at the store and it was awesome. Intuitive, easy to get around, fast, touch-screen is perfect. The iPhone is really good also, but not as fast and responsive as the incredible. That said, if you are on a budget, go for the iPhone 3g (non S version)

The multi-touch on my milestone is perfect, browsing the net is fast on wifi, and mediocre on EDGE, I bought a Jawbone to go with mine and it works perfectly, plus motonav, plus a user installable micro sd card, plus multiple remembered hotspots. Apps are about the same for for mine as for a iphone, some are junk some are awsome. I have better battery life, better range than the iphone, it does have better in call quality.
My phone has had a few issues, I did a factory reset once, and the dumbass who is in charge of contacts, sync, and automatic loading of contacts needs to have his balls removed, and the inability to store other user information on the removable micro sd card is bullshit IMO, as well as the inability to auto update apps.
I love my phone, hate apple products more for the extra cost and stupid users.
A guy at work now wants a macbook as "apple just takes care of you, you don't have to know any of this techie crap" He fails to understand his laptop gets infected by the sites he visits and the hundreds of personal e-mails he gets, and that apple does not magically come in through the chimney and repair everything every night that he fucks up. Typical apple fanboi bullshit.

Any one named their phone titanic?
Cause itunes will say "titanic is syncing" :D
I think OP should say what he plans to use the phone for. It's better to try the phone's for himself.

The 32GB microSD cards are $150 alone. In the US, there is no better phone on AT&T for $199 than a 16GB iPhone. On Verizon, the Incredible is the way to go.
It all depends on your carrier over here, but for the most part, the worthy HTC phones are way more expensive than the iPhone on AT&T, and if you have Verizon, you aren't on a true 3G network, you are on CDMA, so your phone choices are limited.
No, it's not a fanboy decision, it makes no sense to buy an HTC phone over here in most cases, as they cost a ton more. This doesn't even take into account the fact that the iPhone has the best touch interface, or take into account the fact that iPhone becomes a decently open platform if you Jailbreak it.
Short version: Android OS rocks but the phones themselves are a letdown when you factor in price.

Hardware wise, Android phones are much better. I myself would like a Droid. I haven't used the Android OS, but the iPhone OS is one of the best I've used in a long time.

I'd skip them all and buy a Motorola Droid. The build quality is so much better than the HTC and once rooted can be clocked higher than the incredible if you just want a snappier cpu.
I held and used both the Incredible and the moto droid before buying and of the two the moto is just a much nicer phone.

nothing matches the touch screen of the iPhone.
i was going to get the Droid Incredible and passed becasue it's no where near the level of the iPhone.
however if you haven't picked one already...wait a month (July 2010) till the next version of the iphone gets released. DON'T get the 3GS.

I disagree there. While the iPhone is a bit more intuitive with it's layout, I found the touchscreens were both very good. The iPhone is much slower as well. What do you mean by "level" of iPhone?
Really, the one thing that turned me off with iPhone is having to use iTunes and their horribly slow adapter. Aside from that I do really like it. The one big thing that keeps me away from iPhone is AT&T. They'll never see a dime of my money.

In the uk the networks for the iphone seem to be ok,good service good signal. I will admit that the interface/screen on the iphone is very nice, but saying that i have not had a play with a high end htc yet.

@jmcslob, those articles about the bad labor practices were coming from Foxconn. HTC has their own manufacturing plants in Taiwan.

Tell the US govt to make it worth a company's while to come here. Otherwise, I continue to buy what is in my price range, regardless of where it came from.

at and t's assinine contracts. seriously. if you get them unlocked they are about 600-800 bucks. apple sucks for so many reasons. Droid's gonna kick thier asses. and its' 16GB with no SD card slot. Droid just feels better and less of a toy and more of a real OS. ithis just feels like a toy for hipsters. flashy graphics and useless bling.

iOS4 is the nicest operating I've used between iOS, Symbian and Android. I had a quick mess around with a HTC Legend running Android 2.1 and while it was a nice phone (notably the GPS, which got an instant lock indoors first time compared to my N95 8GB which takes up to 5 minutes outdoors) I felt that there was too much depth to the menus. With the iPhone, you basically select something and you're there, on Android it took multiple selections to get to something. Well that's just how I felt, I didn't mess around with it too long, but it was easy for me to use. I set my mam's Legend up for her on my first time using one lol.

Except that no Droid has as nice of a screen, or as nice as a touch interface. Apple still has it all over the competitors in that arena. Not to mention the dedicated GPU the iPhone has to allow for smoother games if that's your thing.
As far as the SD card slot, it isn't an issue. First off, I can't think of being away from my computer and files long enough to actually use all 16GB between syncs. Lets say after apps I have 12GB left for music (which is actually being quite generous to your argument). That's like 1200 songs at around 320kb/s aac. I can't listen to 1200 songs in one sitting. I have 750 320kb songs on mine, some porn, and a shitload of pictures and ebooks, and still have 5.1GB free. Not to mention, I can just stream the unsynced music over 3G from my server while I'm away using JukeFly or Orb Networks, and then I don't even have to convert from flac, as they transcode on the fly. Would it be better with the option to add SD cards in addition to the 16GB? Yes, it would. Does it actually make a real world difference to 99.9% of all users out there? No it doesn't.
And unlocked Android phones will comparable feature to iPhones aren't really any cheaper.
As for AT&T, they have the best service around here, and the best Internet speeds over the network. Verizon and Sprint are complete and utter garbage.
You need to get past your brand hatred and actually try one for an extended period of time before you knock it. Blind brand hatred is every bit as bad as being a fanboy.

I have tried various iphone models that friends have. they all suck. the interface is just flashy to get people to buy it, then it got old really quick. and everyone here with ATT hates it. verizon and sprint are strongest in my area. att has great voice coverage here but the 3g is worse then the coverage map indicates. droids on verizon and palm pre and pixi from sprint dominate my area. specially droids.
I know two friends I see occassionally with iphones crave a droid but they are locked into contracts so they can't ditch thier iphones. one I know got one as a gift and can't afford to replace it and the other's company bought it mostly for the magellan gps app and the weather apps and internet use for business stuff and some media, but they can't tolerate the horrid sound quality over thier nice car speakers and the closedness of it. yes you can jailbreak but you should not have to at all. I can't tolerate apple as a company and I sure as hell can't stand their products. they only care about looks and getting the average joes to fork over for it. looks and interface aren't everything. too me it looks goofy and unprofessional. very plasticy.
and BTW apple's osx interface has looked the same plasticy cartoony look for a long long time. it's soooo dull compared to windows 7's aero glass interface. windows 7 looks comfy and inviting, the osx interface is grey, dull and rigid.
Wile E
07-28-2010, 10:05 AM
Interface is everything in a device you interact with. Your opinion on it and OS X is just that, an opinion. I bet you didn't spend any significant time on either. Just tried them briefly, made up your mind that you didn't like them, then moved on.
And none of your arguments change the fact that the iPhone has the best screen, and best touch screen.
All you spout is blind Apple hatred. You argument that "it looks plasticy, goofy and unprofessional" is just as bad as Apple fanboys exclaiming how awesome it looks. You are dismissing it based on looks, just like they are grabbing it based on looks. It's the same principle.
The only valid arguments you have had against it is the carrier, which varies by area (AT&T is apparently crappy there. It's the best here.), and it's closed nature, which is solved by jailbreaking. A lot of other phones have to go thru the same thing to get all of their available features, especially Palms. It's just called cooked roms for other phones. ;)
I tried Droids, they are awesome, but they don't compare to iPhone in the screen category.
Like I said, somebody needs to hurry up and port Android to all the iPhones, and we'll have the best of all worlds.
