Tippmann used to make the highest quality, top of the line guns when I played. This was back in '89-'93. They pioneered many of the advances in paintball. I'm not sure about modern Tippmann's, but if they are anything like thier predicessors it should be quality. The sport has changed. It used to be played in camo, slinking around plugging you enemy with quick bursts, not hosing 700 balls in an arena.
I remeber when I chunked down $425 for my old Tippmann Pro Am. Solid metal, open bolt, built in squeegy, extreme accuracy. Totally bitchin.
EDIT:
Found my old gun! Indestrictible construction.

I used to have a couple of Spyder guns and thought they were pretty good for the price. I'd agree that Tippman make the best quality ones, though I've never wanted to fork out that much dough for one.

Go with Tippman, I have used both the A-5 and Model 98. Great paintball guns on a budget.
Currently I own a Tippman A5 and an AGD Xmag.
Also, the A5 has a built in hopper with cyclone feed. They work fantastic, you could upgrade to a Flatline barrel system later that will give you about double the range of a standard paintball gun. The thing is seriously impressive.

I have a tippman 98 with the custom mod and a machined out reservoir for even more painful action, and a unknown brand .68 pistol that shoots a respectable 220 FPS, and a spyder for friends. We had our guns put on a chronometer and maximum for my tippman with a good quality ball is about 340FPS with a flatline barrel. I did a minor bit of cleanup on a tiny ridge they left in during machining and managed to run some prograde balls out at full. All I know is at 20 feet it leaves bleeding 6" bruises on me through three layers.
The 98 custom is a great way to start, it offeres the best bang for the buck approach to the sport, just get some pads, or grow some balls if you want to play rough. We ran through 18,000 balls one day in the mountains with 6 of us. I had about 20 bleeding bruises and hurt almost too much to fish the next day. But the adrenaline rush is worth it, a friend chasing your ass through woods taking shots at you, hearing them whip through the branches, the spray as they explode on the tree where you just were.

We just used to shoot each other with BB guns. It was cheaper for the same pain levels.

I believe I still have a copper BB lodged in my forearm from a gun we hooked up to a air tank, there is a large bump where it buried itself in as a kid, and other than that all I remember about it was being too afraid to tell my parents as they would take it away.
Paintballs hurt worse but are much less dangerous when the standard precautions are taken.
