What is the minimum data plan is required for Verizon smartphones (besides a Blackberry)? Like if I were to get a Palm Treo or a Motorola Q what kind of plan would I need? Or are there any smartphones that don't require data plans?
I'm not really planning on using the phone much for internet or email or anything. It's just that I can't really find any phones that I like that are not smartphones.

Why spend all the loot on a smartphone and not use any of the data functions? If you want a regular phone, get a regular phone.

Smartphones are cheap, data plans are slightly more expensive than regular plans. If I could get an unlimited data plan, I would definitely use it a lot. However, my parents won't pay for that. I want a smartphone, but don't want to spend $30/month to have one.

I looked at the website and it said $10/mo for 25MB on Feature or 3G multimedia phones, and $30/mo for Unlimited Data on Feature, 3G multimedia phones, or 3G smartphones.
What is a Palm Treo considered?

because 3g sucks and there this new fangled thing called wifi that doesn't use your plan.
on that note no decent phone can be had without a mandetory data plan, so... get one elswhere jailbreak it, and then get buddy buddy witha verizon guy to get on the cheaper plan with the better phone. Then use wifi most of the time.

Well I've been thinking about starting a small PC "business" so a phone with e-mail and internet would be nice to have.

I was actually in the exact same shoes as you. Wanted to get a smartphone but didn't have the extra 30 a month... There really isn't anything you can do, I've asked Verzion and they just said whats the point in getting a smartphone if all the features aren't there. Its 30 a month or no smartphone.
I too was trying to start a small computer business... Thing is I can't seem to get my name known around my area to get customers.Tried making flyers and passing them out but that didn't help at all. All I see is people going to GeekSquad and I'll I hear is complaints about it. .... Hate QS so much.
Let me know if you find a solution and how your business goes. I could use some advice myself. Good Luck!

If you find a way to mask your IMEI you could do it...But as soon as the phone is Identified on any network as a Smartphone then you get charged the highest DATA plan they have until you call in to get the lowest..
People try to do this all the time usually with no success but I'm sure theirs a way..
Just remember people are getting paid very well to make sure you can't do that.

Fuck Verizon. I had Alltel, and it was good. And then Verizon bought them, changed my contract supposedly without changing my contract because their crap-ass computer system did not compute with the non-fuck-you-over Alltel plan I had, I got them to give me a manual credit for some months to make up for it, then called after that to get a credit for the remaining months, but then they say, "Sorry, can't help ya."
I ask how charging more per month is not changing my plan, and they say it's not changing my plan. If they don't fix it soon, next stop is the BBB, FCC, AG, and whomever else I can think of. Why they're pissing off a potential customer for life near the end of their contract, I have no idea, and they leave me with no choice but to bash them until the end of time. Four months left to go on my contract with these fucksticks.
Maybe check out something like this: http://www.mycricket.com/cell-phone-plans The "Android plan" is $55 a month.
I think it's Virgin Mobile that has $25 for 300-400 minutes a month but unlimited data and on the Sprint network. Not sure how that works since I read something recently about Sprint's "unlimited data" not being unlimited, but beats me.
Anyway, if someone doesn't use a ton of minutes, or even sometimes if they do, prepaid can be surprisingly cheap. Needing data might change the best deal up a bit, but you'd have to look. Best part is you're not locked in for two years with assclown wastes of air like Verizon.

Yeah I don't really use many minutes. I use texting more, and if I could I'd use web (and e-mail) all the time. I've looked into that. I'll probably look back into it. Only problem is shitty phones, except for the Kyocera Loft and the Blackberry (which I'm sure costs like $300 to buy and is like $60/mo).

It looks like T-mobile (regular, or prepaid) can use a smartphone without the smarts. So, wi-fi, just no data. Slap your sim card in and go. Not 100% sure on it yet, but it looks to be the case. And their coverage is quite good.

Found out after some research that the Palm Centro is a Verizon smarthphone that does NOT require a data plan. I may also be able to get a Palm Treo 755 without a data plan (with some modifications).

After March 2010 all Smart phones phones require a data plan even if you buy them used. I had a Palm in 2009 that I bought on Ebay and I used it without the data plan then broke it last month then bought another one on Ebay and now it they require a data plan. It's the same phone and I went to the Verizon store they would not budge and call 1-800 and they wouldn't budge. Even if I have to get a data plan I am just going to switch to AT&T so I can get the iphone
I hope you're right, but I'd make sure to get it in writing. After getting multiple answers from customer support for my contract, AND having it in writing on my contract, AND it being common sense, my trust in Verizon dealing "in good faith" is very low.

I called them to confirm and they said it does not require a data plan. I bought one a few hours ago for $55.

Got my phone in the mail Friday. Called them to activate my phone and block data so I don't have to pay the fees. Phone works fine. Good shit :)
