I think I just Over-Unity-ed my shorts.

Check out some crazy magnetic stuff I found on YT.

Magnetic fields are crazy cool. Just spend an entire semester talking about electrons, Electric Fields, and Magnetic Fields. EECS 220 is Engineering Electromagnetics I, I'm enrolled in the second half this coming semester.

B = uM

where u is the permability of free space(4*pi * 10^-7)
and M is the Magnetization vector, which is the sum of all the magnetic dipoles in a material per unit volume.

Basically the greater the ability a substance has to make magnetic dipoles and align them the better a 'magnet' it can be.

:)

Edit, Ferrofluids are the shit:

Very cool. That looks like one of the N45 neodymium magnets I got from United Nuclear - http://unitednuclear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=70_71

Those puppies are incredibly strong but will shatter if you let go flying into something. The really big ones (over 3 or 4") can actually hurt you if you're not careful.

I've got a source for n52 magnets. Just need to put some money in the bank so I can place an order. I want to make some odd things...maglev vehicle...railgun...bendini circuit...

Too expensive for me, but probably worth it if you need them for an actual project. I just use them as hangers for my tools - attach one to a metal surface and then attach the tool. I have pens, screw drivers, small wrenches, etc suspended from my desk lamps, shelves and filing cabinets. If I need something, I don't have to go rooting around in a tool box or drawer, I just look around the room until I see what I need. It looks like shit but is very practical. :)

edit - also great for posting notes to the wall. Just find the metal edging for the sheet rock or locate a nail and you can create a bulletin board anywhere in the house.
