Quite the odyssey... a lot of shit going down at your place I presume.

So if you stole the Jet; Do you get to keep the Jet? Can you sell the Jet to Malta, or another country cause it's YOUR jet?

Or will Malta ship it back to Libya?

Quite the odyssey... a lot of shit going down at your place I presume.

Well, certainly there is at the harbour and at the airport since we're not accustomed to an influx of thousands of travellers. But the rest of the country is quiet. A bit too quiet because a lot of people are worried that things might get worse. Being the nearest EU country to Libya, a lot of countries (Germany, UK, Sweden...) are placing their own military aircrafts here... and we're hoping Gaddafi doesn't get a crazy moment and send a couple of his jets to bomb them down... in our airport... I'm also not sure of our safety if Gaddafi decides to use chemical weapons in Tripoli - which is only 200 miles away.

Well, the last news we had on the jets was that the "Libyan Government" has requested them back. But it's highly unlikely they will be returned, at least not until the fighting is over since if returned they will be used to kill more people.

I hope that when the turmoil is over Libya will let us keep the Jets -- if Malta sells them to another country we would probably pay off all our country's debts!

Latest News Sunday, 27th February 2011 - 14:47CET http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20110227/local/catamarans-leave-tripoli-15-maltese-on-board:

The Maria Dolores and another catamaran, San Gwann, are carrying more than 500 workers of several nationalities to Malta. The Portuguese ambassador to Tripoli is also on one of the vessels.

Many embassies in Tripoli have now closed down, including the embassies of the US, the UK and Canada.

A spokesman for Virtu' Ferries said the two vessels will leave on a third trip to the Libyan capital late tonight.

200 miles is a pretty good buffer zone. I don't remember much about chemical weapons, but things like Sarin I think degrade very quickly (could be wrong though).
The most important chemical reactions of phosporyl halides is the hydrolysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolysis) of the bond between phosphorus and the fluoride. This P-F bond is easily broken by nucleophilic agents, such as water and hydroxide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxide). At high pH, sarin decomposes rapidly to nontoxic phosphonic acids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphonic_acid) derivatives.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarin#cite_note-7)[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarin#cite_note-8)
from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarin#Degradation_and_shelf_life)

Something like Antharax might be more of a problem but a) that can be treated and b) even with favorable wind patterns, I doubt it could make it 200 miles in any significant concentration.

So does this mean you could see a Nuke going off if one was to say hit Libya?

If a nuke is visible from 200 miles away, then yes. Though I'm not particularly eager to see a scene like this irl, only while gaming :)...

Libya doesn't have nuclear warfare though, afaik only chemical stuff?

From Malta's airport to Tripoli it's 350.5 Km (according to google earth). The most powerful bomb ever made was the 50 MTon Tsar-Bomba, that had a fireball with 3.5Km radius, an obliteration radius of 35Km and a mushroom cloud 65Km tall. This could be seem from ~1000Km away from the impact point. This was a test bomb and the only one made. Hopefully, no country has anything of this kind. You're safe from disintegration...but not from radiation...maybe.

EDIT: Upon further investigation, the only armament that Lybia has that could hit Malta are some SCUD-B missiles (around 400 of them), if they are still in firing condition. Being Soviet built, I'd think they could still pack a punch. Nothing about chemical warfare, though.
TBH, I wouldn't worry about a over-seas attack, since Lybia can't handle itself for now and most of their equipment is soviet cold war stuff, that could have been poorly maintained.

3 days ago a Libyan aircraft containing 14 people wanted to land here but our airport refused because of lack of credentials. There was the rumor that Gaddafi's daughter Aisha was on that plane. It circled over Malta for some 20 minutes, then it had to leave.

Now the real story surfaced http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20110227/local/libyan-plane-carried-pilots-to-fly-mirages-back-pm:

http://img.techpowerup.org/110227/Untitled852.png

Our Maltese army is very small, no one surely has enough knowledge to pilot back these planes even had they wanted to. That's why Gaddafi wanted to send pilots on this plane which was refused landing permission... so that his pilots get the jets back to Libya. Thank heavens our airport refused permissions

About political asylum, I can't understand why the pilots' request is still pending :( They defected because they didn't want to kill civilians. If they're sent back they'd be killed instantly. We have got to give them asylum status and do away with any red tape!(ch)

Oh c'mon, flying a Mirage F1DD can't be that hard.

Anyone with 300 hours of FS can do it. :D You can totally see where the start button is and the direction thingy.

Flying a Chinook in BF:V is like flying a bus. Trust me. But, then again, not all buses have dual mini-guns attached to the sides.

@BP: It would be nice to have you as the TPU/GN AF. TPU would be unstoppable.
This would be you flying and W1zzard on the ground, testing the equipment.

EDIT: I'd like to add that once again, I saw the only good working government body at it's best (really). When it comes to situations like this our embassies do all the efforts to bring all countrymen back to home soil. This is evidenced in the news posted here, where our ambassador is the very last one to leave. However I was surprised to see how many were over there. Even more surprisingly, that they were happy there and the majority wants to return to Lybia once this is all over. There's still bad news for us, since we imported 30% of our oil from Lybia, prices are going to sky-rocket. Oh well.

Psst. Be quiet. They're not supposed to know! :D
Probable the US has mobilized a aircraft carrier and a frigate, or a battleship. I can't imagine their purpose in starting to blast everything or make an infantry assault.

Yeah, big surprise for the Arab League. I guess they figured that Gadhafi's forces would be standing in the middle of the desert and far away from civilians while patiently waiting for the air strikes. Morons.

Western Money can only buy so much support. If the Arabs want to keep their own people from revolting they need to limit their visible ties to the west. And the feeling seems to be that Arabs should be supporting this Arab uprising, with no Western Intervention...but you know they will never do that...so we get stuck in the middle...which is why we need to curb our interventionist policy of sticking our dicks in each and every cess pit sitting on top of an oil reserve...but we are hopelessly addicted to oil...so we keep the wars going.
