Picked up a 06 GTO yesterday. Snapped a few pics, but weather is a little gloomy today. These two turned out the best.

Very nice, and to be honest, I don't think I have ever seen a deep red GTO before, has to be a fairly rare color.

Are you at a water treatment facility?
The spot your at looks like the Electric Plant at a local Steel Mill.

Wow. I just looked at the specs (http://www.edmunds.com/pontiac/gto/2006/features-specs.html). 400hp and a 9.3 lbs/hp ratio. Damn. You must be looking at 4 second 0-60 times.
Someday I'll have to get a really fast car. I can do 0-60 in 8 seconds and that feels like I'm flying. {sigh}

No, it's The Big Dam Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dam_Bridge). Yes it's really called that. :)
I wanted something powerful in the background to compliment the powerful car. My apartment complex parking lot wasn't up to the task.

This one has over 400 HP because of upgraded headers. So yeah I think I'll be looking at around 4.8 0-60 in a fairly large car. Unfortunately, I've yet to really open it up. I've never owned a manual before and my Acura CL had half the HP. Going to take a few days to get used to.
It's definitely going to the drag strip sometime this summer. Although that won't be a regular occurrence because I don't want to tear it up too much.

I remember trying to learn my Mustang. Coming from a 5 speed saturn to a GT was interesting. I wound up sideways or sliding more times than I care to admit. So you have never driven a manual transmission car before?

I've driven them, but never owned one. I learned to drive manual on my brother's 91 Toyota Camry with a clutch that was sloppier than a 50 year old hooker. I've also driven my friend's hybrid honda civic a handful of times. I find the GTO easier shift than either of those. I've only killed it once so far :(.

At least you know how. 4 banger is the best way to learn, big muscle car will scare the crap outta you. Just get the technique first, learning that 6 speed, then speed will follow.

I paid cash for it so I'm not making car payments. I'm considering my fuel cost as a "car payment". It won't really get that much worse mileage than my Acura CL did. I'm getting 18 MPG combined city and highway at the moment with my admittedly crappy shifting.

That is better than my 2V Mustang GT with 3.73's was getting. I could squeak out 20MPG highway and 15 city. Combined was 16.

450 is most fun.
How would you know? 450 is overkill for anything except 1/4 mile use. For daily use, the only real thing that you need good power for is highway merging and passing. Even in my 300HP mustang, I could be doing 90mph down most on ramps and during passing. With 400HP, even faster.

Because my friend has an '07 Nissan Altima Coupe with 400hp, and it's fun as hell. 450 would be a great point of balance.

The difference isn't as big as you would think, the only time you will really tell the difference is if you are racing the car that has 50hp more and watching it pull away.

Polaris - don't be insulted. I'm sure you know this, but a reminder can't hurt.
Don't do any downshifting until you have a good feel for the transmission. I only found this out about a year ago - that if you downshift, the rev limiter won't save your ass.
I'd heard about some kid who trashed a brand new Corvette by downshifting into the wrong gear and killed the engine.
I've been driving a stick for about 20 years and I still fuck up from time to time and pick the wrong gear to shift into. Thank god I've never REALLY screwed up, but I've come close a few times.

No insult taken. I appreciate you saying something, it's always good to have reminders. I've been driving it very cautiously. People can hate on me all they want for driving a muscle car and not using it to it's full potential, but it will probably be a good two months before I do anything too aggressive in it.
This car has lots of pluses besides its 400+ HP. As anyone that's been in one can tell you it's an EXTREMELY comfortable car and is fun to drive even if you're not going 100 MPH. I do not want to damage or destroy it because I overestimated my abilities to control it.
The enjoyment of cruising by someone while the 6.0L rumbles is more than enough to make me smile for the time being.

Dilema:
I have two cars the GOAT and my 98 Acura CL 3.0. Originally I was going to sell the CL and use the GTO as my daily driver, but the CL is worth <$1900. I'm now wondering if I should continue to beat on the CL for the daily commute and use the GTO for Friday's, weekends, and days where I need my mood lifted. Half of my 20 minute commute is creeping up a bumpy road in traffic to the interstate.
So the question is pocket the cash or save wear and tear on my favorite (and expensive) new toy? I don't make payments on either car. What would you do?

I guess liability insurance where you are isn't a big deal. In the people's republic of New Jersey, having 2 cars, even if one just has liability coverage, almost doubles my premiums. So if you were here, it would be a no-brainer.
Even so, it must cost you something extra for an extra car, if you factor that in together with the say, $1500 you could get for the acura, it might be worth it.
If your commute is mostly highway miles, I don't see that it makes much difference for the new car. Sitting in traffic is a bitch what with having to shift every 5 seconds, but I don't know how much wear and tear you'd really be saving.
I'd call it a toss up.
edit: also, I don't think it's good to shift which car you drive all of the time. It hampers your ability to react instinctively since you first have to remember which car you're driving. From that point of view, I would recommend driving just one car all of the time.

I'm assuming your rates aren't a huge issue as it wasn't mentioned, liability here is dirt cheap. I say keep it as a commuter, having a backup car is always a good plan when your other car has 400hp. It maybe reliable, but 400hp can break things.

Yeah that. My family is never without a car. We have access to the following between us:
1995 F150
1999 VW Beetle TDI
1989 IROC-Z
1995 G20 van
1996 Saturn SL1
1998 Dodge Ram 1500
All of which run and are on the insurance. Once I get my T-bird fixed, we will have that too.

:D Welcome to da clerb Pol :D
They are great - congrats.
My experiences with these machines
1. My wife can empty half the fuel tank just getting to the shops and back, fuck knows what she does but she watches a lot of 'top gear'. Jeremy Clarskon needs locking up.
2. The smile on the face of the guy at the tyre shop should be taken seriously - these cars can eat up rubber if you are not careful. Make sure the front wheels stay in alignment, it's hard to tell you are scrubbing away a wide profile tyre with power steering.
3. Ricer HP are not real HP, you will do them all at the lights coz you will not need to rev to 85,000 bazillion rpm to get enough torque to pull away from a standstill. Meanwhile you smoked em.
4. Tunnels, and up hill straights are wonderful to get the induction sound happening, just awesome.
5. Its great fun to come up fast on people on country roads and 'monster' their rear view. You can see when they are unsettled when they start driving erratically - when you overtake them, glance over at them while casually driving one hand and making sure they understand resistance is futile - you the boss.
6. have fun, they don't really use much fuel if you are reasonable about how you drive it. The engines are very well built.

Not sure about that statement. The LS series motors never were that impressive off the line, it's the top end that is scary. A 315HP Mach 1 will have lamb chops off the line against that goat, but once the goat gets it big ass rolling, then it reels em in.

I feel that way too. So I guess another question I need to ask myself is do I want to use it up and dump it in a few years or do I want to still be taking joyrides in my classic GTO 20 years from now (assuming gas is available 20 years from now )
Of course who knows if it will be a classic 20 years from now too. Tons of people think it's bland and boring and that feeling may be permanent. Granted even if it is a classic 20 years from now I'm not going to garage it for the duration. It's going to get driven and that's going to devalue it and not make it collectable. However, I'm not the average car owner and while I'm not a mechanic by any means I know enough to keep after maintenance and even perform a lot of the maintenance myself.
Lots of things to think about so far. Thanks guys keep the thoughts coming if you want to.

400 horsepower is 400 horsepower. Those ricers just need to learn how to launch.

I don't think these cars are built well enough to be collectable. They should be used and enjoyed IMO.
400 horsepower is 400 horsepower. Those ricers just need to learn how to launch.
Of course this is true. My point (however trollish) was to imply that the available HP is easier to find in a v8. No learning or practice needed, just a heavy foot.

yeah keep the acura, don't know what insurance you have but when i added my acura legend onto my policy with my f150 the premiums went down. multi car discount, progressive.
granted that was liability only on the acura.
beyond that you'll save well more than 1900$ in gas, wear/tear, and regular maintenace beating on a 1900$ car compared to a 16k car. Run the acura till it stops, use the gto as the play/show off car.
besides as cdwall pointed out, you never know when you're going to need that backup vehicle.

My 2006 Sentra SpecV (2.5l 4 banger)has more horsepower than my Dad's 1979 Mustang GT v8.
Besides, turbos are a great equalizer. The only replacement for displacement is technology.
