We have done it! HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou has confirmed in a quote from the HTC facebook page that they will no longer be locking the bootloaders on their devices. This could be the first step to other companies following suit. We can only hope. Here’s the quote from Mr. Chou.

Very nice.

Now if only Motorola would quit being dicks.

I want ROMs for my Atrix, dammit.

Yeah, I hear you. I'm still rocking the first Incredible so I haven't had to deal with a locked bootloader yet, but I hope I don't ever have to.

Unlocking it would make your Atrix a perfect phone for quite some time.

I still don't understand why you would unlock the boot loader...

So you can load whatever OS you want.

It's fairly easily done anyway but a hard reset means a re hack.

I think we're beginning to see the effects of competition.

And why would you want to do that?

And why would you want to do that?

There is a whole underground community that offer custom OS, some are VERY good, some meh. The point is that you can have your phone run and look exactly how you want.

Not on an Atrix. Nobody has cracked the encryption yet.

And why would you want to do that?

Customize it exactly how you want, add features like native smb support, more a/v support, overclocking, update to new builds of android on phones that manufacturers are not updating or are updating supremely slow (my Atrix fits this category). Lot's of reasons, really.
