I had the RC before it was mentioned in that thread. My dad brought it up because it is much cheaper than Pepsi. Those two liter Pepsi bottles were purchased for 97 cents a peice on sale (crate of 8). :D
It's going to cost me about $700-$1000 when that CRT kicks the can (approximate cost for new PSU, GPU, and LCD monitor). :(
LCD will help with programming but it will suck for gaming.

Even most IPS or PVA panels have hardly any ghosting problems anymore, tn-film definitely doesn't have the ghosting problems. I still recommend IPS or PVA tho, as they have better color quality and viewing angles. Your eyes will be less stressed as well.

IPS are expensive and hard to find. VA have poor response times. TN have limited color capabilities.
I'll have to make that decision when the time comes (used CRT or LCD). For now, I hope this CRT lasts another 10 years. :D

The yellow counter of my desk is about 2" from the wall it is mounted to and about 8" from the other wall. Most of the cables drop through those slots and also allow all the hot air to escape instead of pooling underneath.

i've got a VA and a TN, and the TN looks clearer and brighter than the VA - the main difference is that when on a solid black image, the VA panel is a 'solid' black while the TN is washed out and has... ripples? waves? of brighter streaks through it - black isnt black on TN.

The part that makes me laugh is that a CRT spanks them all. CRT has instantaneous response times, a full color pallete (16,777,216+ colors--infinite), unlimited view angle (just limited by cabinet), and can handle pretty much any resolution with the right tweaks. From where I stand, there's nothing good about an LCD (aside from heat and power consumption--things that really don't matter to me).
By the way, that yellow counter is I think 12' long. Everything looks so small in that picture (I wonder if there was a funky lense on the camera).
Mussels
08-04-2009, 11:12 AM
CRT's are also huge, heavy and power hungry.
Then theres the fact that many games these days will only run at 60Hz (like say.... ALL directX 10 titles) leaving you with a flickery piece of crap.
FordGT90Concept
08-04-2009, 11:41 AM
I've played some games at 60 Hz and I couldn't tell. It's the desktop/2D stuff where 60 Hz drives me bonkers.
NVIDIA cards can override the refresh rate:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak\RefreshOverrides]
"EnableRefreshOverrides"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak\RefreshOverrides\1024x7 68]
"RefreshRate"=dword:00000055
"Flags"=dword:00000007
This should work on all:

Except that a cheap CRT actually looks worse than a good LCD, despite the specs being technically superior.
And NO, most modern S-PVA panel do not have really bad response times today.
While no LCD is in range of crt in response time, if you can't see the flicker in a 60hz image while gaming, I doubt you will notice any of the timing shortcomings of a good lcd. Modern panels are nothing like the panels that started all the rumors of how bad lcds are compared to crt. It just isn't the case anymore.

TPU should never let me get bored. ever.
pics will follow soon.
i got bored and realised my room looked like a mess.
I thought to myself - hmm, lets make it look like a GAMERS PARADISE
http://img.techpowerup.org/090901/Capture079.jpg
yes, i have zip tied my speakers to coat hangers for real surround sound.
Yes, that is a 360 controller + headset connected to my PC (and working 100%)
YES, that is a bottle of bundy rum that you must drink
YES!, that is a 40" HDTV :D
(yes, that is a photo of the photo... uhh, dont ask how that happend. i think i broke reality)
http://img.techpowerup.org/090901/Capture086.jpg
Best mice, keyboards, and mousepad i've ever used (and when they break, i'll buy the same again - why replace whats perfect?)
http://img.techpowerup.org/090901/Capture080.jpg
yes, that is a refridgerator for a foot rest (to keep mah feet cool in summer)
yes, that is a heater to keep my balls feet from freezing in winter
http://img.techpowerup.org/090901/Capture083.jpg
yes, thats a $200 leather chair to park my arse in.
So... apart from the Z-5500s on warranty, what am i missing? :D

Scantily clad woman slave that wears gaming themed clothing and sits ... you know... that would take away from the gaming experience.
Unless said scantily clad woman was somehow involved in a Wii game. I better copyright that, before you know Nintendo would have WiiWhores, an all new interactive game. New game mechanic involves hitting all the right timing to get a power-up so cool lights flash on the screen.

yeah but it took forever, and i had to send the set in pieces (doubling up on insurance and tracking) since none of the couriers would take it whole.

I can't speak for others but I can explain why I have my speakers setup that way.
I bought my speakers back when Klipsch first released the Pro Media Line. I bought the first 4.1 set that went on sale. Back then I was single and had my own pad. I had them setup in my bedroom in the 'proper' 4.1 config.
Then i got married. We bought our first house and my Wife HATED me placing surround speakers behind where I sat because behind me is the rest of the den with a big tv and HT system. For me to have my 4.1 speakers setup in the proper config. I would have to place one rear speaker on an end table and the other next to the TV. (This looks stupid and she hates it.)
So to make her happy I placed all my speakers under my monitor, and I run them in quadrophonic mode NOT surround mode.
As you should know Quadrophonic = Stereo 4.0.
Now for gaming I prefer 5.1 so I bought a 5.1 gaming headset with detachable mic. Sure its not proper 5.1 but it has 8 speakers total (4 per ear cup) and it sounds hella good when gaming.
So now maybe you understand? (toast)

I still do 5.1 (or 7.1) for some games, but my 7.1 speakers aren't normally in surround. When I first put them in surround lined up like that, it just took a little getting used to the concept footsteps on the far right hand side was footsteps right rear. Once I got the hang of it, it was easy to tell sound direction with 7.1 all lined up in front of me.
Again, too cheap to buy a new set when this set works.

Then get some stands or make some so the wife will shut up. Either that or i can lend you 2 bucks to get a roll of duct tape and you place your speakers where you want.
No offense intended, just poking fun. (toast)
Anyways, i didnt mean just the pics here but i have seen ALOT of people (including alot of my friends) who buy a 5.1 system and have all the speakers in front of them on their desk. Im like so WHY did you buy this again? Its one thing to say you have 5.1 but it makes you look stupid if you buy them and dont use them the way they are intended to knowing you cant. (slap)
Also, back when i lived in my parents house and used PA speakers as surround sound with a reciever i used Quadraphonic sound in a 4 speaker surround sound. Its possible, as demonstrated by my Creative Console.
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/5111/quadp.png
I had to do it this way because even though all 4 cabs had 2 15s and a horn (Highs, mids, lows with an independent crossover in each cab) i still technically didnt have a sub. Back then i had either onboard or a Live! card and couldnt dictate where bass went so i did this instead. Still surround but still technically Quadraphonic.
Oh and to contribute to the thread instead of just ranting heres my little setup. Nothing fancy, but i do have a new LCD.

I should have been more clear. Where I sit at my desk I have the rest of the den behind me. My Wife is usually on the couch watching tv or at her desk working or at the hobbie table doing crafts...this is all done in the same room so If I use my speakers while gaming I'm usually disrupting her. I don't blame her for not wanting to hear me shooting a gun and explosions going off...or the sound of my engine wile I race...
The headphones do more than offer me 5.1 surround sound it offers me the freedom to play my games fairly loud and give my wife peace as well. :D
This setup works for me.
When I play on the PS3 it is hooked up to a 61" Sammy and a HT system with all the speakers in the correct places. So I get to experience true surround sound via the new HD sound formats. Not to mention movies too.
I'm very happy with my den the way it is.

Yeah, fuck that worrying about aesthetics bullshit. Proper sound/performance come before looks. Hell, I have ethernet cable all thru my house. Gb networking, ftw! Who gives a shit if you can see the wires? lol.
The wife will get used to ugly stuff if she doesn't want to hear me bitching about how shitty something sounds, or how slow my network transfers are going. Whether she relates or likes it or not, she will give in when she tires of the bitching. :D lol

Are you f*ing insane?? We have a living room with a 37" flat screen over the fireplace. She can go there if she wants to watch TV in total peace; (and she does on a regular basis.)
The Den has a 61" Series 7 LED DLP with Infinity Beta series speakers, Hsu sub, and high end Onkyo receiver with a PS3 attached. This is the entertainment room...This is where i spend all my time when lounging at home. I'll be damned if my HT system moves...or my super comfy couch lol!!! Where would I play my PS3? On my pc? on a 24" screen? F* that. (slap)
I should add though that we plan to buy a bigger house in the next 5 years or so. When we do we will have our very own offices; hers being her official office for work (she works from home) and mine being my game room. I will also have a room dedicated to library duties. Depending on the house having a finished basement or not I will have a dedicated Home Theater room as well.

Seems like 2 people seperating themselves in their own house cuase they cant really accept each others hobbies. To each his own though.

I doubt it. My fiancee and I share the same understanding. We have different hobbies, and are both fully accepting of that. There is absolutely no animosity between us over it.
Quite frankly, if we both liked the same exact things, it would get boring as fuck anyway.

Hi
No offense taken. What I can say?.. It's all I have 2x4m, from my living-room to work and play around. I receive a lot of "dead" boards, to see if they are really "dead" before the recycling (some, on the right side of desk) and 2 on top of DFI box (left) the others you see with graphics on, are OCing boards from different generations Athlons XP, 939, AM2,...
Keeping the boxes from all new components, in that tiny space and all de rest it's hard. lol
It's what requested: Crazy Pictures from my desktop - RIGHT NOW! :D
