What was it and how did you like it? Just dump 'em in here every time you watch one and feel free to discuss.

My most recent was a stinker called Wanted which featured this:

http://i42.tinypic.com/2lxgm8p.jpg

Thats right. Angelina Jolie riding the hood of a red viper in a designer dress and wielding heavy metal. That sounds wayyyy better then it is, believe me. And the rest of it is just cliche after cliche of classic "young man fulfilling his destiny" crap. It even has a "LUKE I AM YOU FATHER" bit. The very definition of "dumb action flick."

Its a 6/10. But 6.5 because of the great visual effects. Especially toward the end.

Wanted was pretty good, I've seen better.

Last movie I watched was Igor with my son. It's pretty funny but kinda boring. Found myself checking TPU every-so-often

Watched The Hangover.

It sucked.
5/10.

Only 5 because atleast the story made sense. And tazering is fun. Otherwise I didn't really laugh at all. Poor slapstick humor.

Last movie I watched was Taken. I'd give it a 7/10. Not great, but it wasn't bad.

Just finished watching platoon. That film was ok i guess. Dunno i think that when ever i seen one American war film (jarhead for example) you kinda seen them all. Although good to watch a classic, they don't make films like that anymore. 12A has ruined films for the UK. RUINED them i tell you. Stupid spiderman brought that in. How i a loath films with 12A rating. Means its good, but dummed it down so kids can watch it with the mommy and daddy. Grr i hate it. Just make it a 15 and keep the good bits that makes it good.

Star Trek is a good film though, wished the cut the comedy bits out. But other wise enjoyable.

i liked Platoon pretty good. seems sort of like a film of the moment, though. maybe back then it had more weight to it? the subplots in it didn't do much for me

i'm giving myself a chocie of 4 tonight if i get around to it:

Burn After Reading
Taken
Micheal Clayton
Lakeview Terrace

depends on what i'm in the mood for. i've heard poor things about Lakeview but i always have to find out for myself

i also have The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Valkyrie on hand. a few others, too. Changeling, i'm pretty sure

TAKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That film is FRIGGING AWESOME. Best film of the year without a doubt. Valkyrie - only watch that if you want some giggles at Tom Cruise trying to be a good actor. Best role i seen him in was in tropic thunder.

wow high praise for Cruise! :p

i think i'm leaning toward Taken or Burn After Reading. you aren't the first to rave over Taken, which people seem to love. when i start a movie i always keep watching no matter what. so i choose carefully. Burn After Reading? idk i get to laugh with that one

Taken doesn't seem like it would have many funnies :(

WhiteLotus
06-12-2009, 02:16 AM
no - no funnies what so ever. BUT man, its such an awesome film. I rate it so higly. Liam Neeson kicking the shit outta some croats for over an hour. What more could you want. The guy is a legend. Plays such a good role, film is just constant action. Much better than James Bond. It's just awesome. relies on good old action and a few explosions. None of this run through a construction site rubbish which bond did.

Not seen Burn after reading - meant to be funny though, got a good cast. And have seen Changeling, that was good, again good cast (good to John Malkovitch) although that film is a chill film with a couple of beers and some pizza.

I hope Terminator is better.

Yeah but I have a feeling I'll like it more. I've decided just not to trust others for my own movie pleasure. I like Terminator 3 better than any other so far, but of course it was popular to say 2 is better. Parroting is so rampant these days I just have to stop listening to people.

Fair enough, T3 would have been so much better if they cut out the bit where arnie put on those star glasses and the Talk to the hand bit in the petrol station. Those bits ruined it for me. Although otherwise yea - a good film. Just needed the comedy nuked out and it would have been a top film.

In my opinion.

Yeah again that's that cliched humor that no action flick can seem to get rid of, it bugs me too. But the first 2 had that a bit as well. That almost ruined the Dark Knight for me, and Return of the King, they go so good and then she takes off her helmet proclaiming "I'm no man", it just makes me wanna cry....

I try to see past that though in the ones worth seeing past.

Terminator 4 was great.. from the point of view of someone who cares little for plot/character development.. and just likes explosions (that'd be me)

i liked this movie. good suspense, good action and performances for the most part. dramatic, sure. but some of the drama and suspense is lost for the fact we all know the outcome. not the exact outcome, but we know Hitler doesn't die, the mission fails, and most likely the "traitors" are caught and killed just by knowing simple history

this could have been rectified with more back story about the cruise character, but we get none. he is a Colonel in the german army but we don't see how he rose there. nor do we know about his upbringing, education, the Nazi horrors he may have seen and been aware of, or if he personally was involved in any atrocities. what caused his change of heart? he says "long live sacred germany" a few times but thats about it :/

pretty good nonetheless 7.5/10

I actually got around to watch the Platoon. It was good, in a boring kind of way. I don't know what's up with me these days, I think I've watched to much sucky movies (Ice Planet lol) to appriciate movies that actually are good.

Want to see, badly: New Terminator and Wolverine. Don't have any money, and when I get money they probably don't run them any more. :(

Platoon - for me highlighted major things about being in the USA Army (or whatever the acronym is) back then was really like.

Valkyrie - would have been better to have some one other than cruise play the character. No idea who though. I just do not rate him as a good actor at all. Not even near good.

fairly irreverent Coen Brothers fmovie about a lost data disc, a found data disc, blackmail, betrayal, and espionage of sorts

Coen movies have always had themes of betrayal, desire beyond control, murder, and total insanity. this one had all those elements, but not much story, plot, or an interesting central character to really grasp onto. however as the movie goes on we realize we're watching a parody of sorts. sure this plays like a Coen film in many ways, but it also plays as the Coen's doing the Coen's in a very knowing way. wacky, unstable characters hold it all together and they are ALL, every single one of them, crazy. and because its the Coen brothers of course it all works. just when you think "oh come on!" they do something to make it interesting, something that makes sense, or both

pretty good 7.5/10

Just watched Ong-Bak.

And WOW.

Seriously WOW.

They main actor is played by a Tony Jaa (Western name). And man does he have some moves. Imagine Bruce Lee, mixed with a little Jackie Chan (just a little bit, moves not comedy) and you got an idea of what this guy can do. Seriously impressive stuff, Youtube the fight scene, highly worth watching.

As for the film, i give it a good plot as well as character development. The film boosts no CGI, no strings and its a good thing. The moves are real, it's all real. It's breathe taking to see a guy jump through a ring of barbed wire smaller than a dustbin lid.

The film was subtitled, much prefer subs over bad dubbing. I think it has to go into my top ten films, very very worthwhile the effort i had to put in to get it.

liam neeson saves his daughter's virginity...

....basically. neeson plays a mild mannered ex intelligence guy in this suspense / action thriller about a dad trying to gain the approval of his teenage daughter and satisfy his bitchy ex wife

however things would seem an uphill battle as he gets his 17 year old a karaoke machine for her birthday while her wealthy stepfather presents her with a show horse as neeson stands at the b-day party with his hands in his pockets. but hey, you can't win 'em all. lucky for neeson opportunity knocks as his daughter takes a trip to Europe (against neeson's wishes so we can feel "he told you so") to follow U2 on tour, but is saved from that torture when she is kidnapped and sold into white slavery by some rascally eastern european types

nah i like U2 :p

anyway this is all the excuse neeson needs to go to Paris and start kicking arse and taking names. transformed from mild mannered ex CIA man to a leather coat wearing "kill first and ask questions later" one man hit machine, neeson travels abroad and hooks up with old friends and enemies alike to seek out his daughter, and to kill the men who hold her innocence captive and for sale to the highest bidder

performances are good, action well done (not overdone), and following neeson around is easy as he gives credit to his character's single minded mission, and makes you believe the "man on the edge" bit for every second he is onscreen

good action suspense 8/10

@WhiteLotus: Think thats bad? Right after RotK extended cut came out I had like 15 ppl over at my house and watched all three extended cuts straight through on my big screen. Like 11 hours or something, lol. Luckily I have access to a carnival style industrial popcorn popper and cheap kernals and butter.

OH and Taken DAMN what a good movie. Absolutely no flaws IMO, and thats coming from a very strict film critic. Great acting, great scriptwriting, great (simple but effective, not unneccesarily complicated) story.

Sam Jackson plays an arrogant cop and widower father who doesn't care for his new mixed race neighbors, the people he works with, or seemingly his own children. one thing leads to another, another becomes murder, and his whole house of cards begins to unravel

i liked this movie more then i expected from some reviews. i can see its potential, but it was never reached. and its too darkly lit and clumsily directed at times, also. what holds it all together are the two male leads. Jackson and "ordinary guy" Patrick Wilson have some interesting exchanges, and play a suburban game of cat and mouse which is somewhat intriguing, and i found the subplot of an approaching wildfire an intriguing distraction. the "race card" is present but subtle the way it often is in life, and the psycho sexual matter makes sense. it just never comes together quite right and falls into some Hollywood cliche from time to time. especially the end

this is good to watch as "last movie" of the night. the person i watched it with called it a "real good TV movie." and thats sort of how it comes off. if nothing else watching Jackson do his thing makes it all worth it. his character could have been played "psycho" or CRAZY...but instead he is subtle, devious, manipulative, and sane. he's just an asshole, basically. the kind with a badge. and is having trouble in his personal life

a could have been better 6.5/10

I hope he doesn't. If he did, he'll bastardise it terribly. It's an awesome film because it is Korean, get some americans to do it and it'll be a film that should be shot down and anyone that took part in it hung drawn and quartered. There are some foreign films that should NEVER be westernised, Oldboy is one of them.
