I've been thinking of getting a Windows phone lately. Hopefully porting my contacts from Android would be easy.

Yes, not right now though. :p

It should be. Your cellphone provider should have everything necessary to do it.

The only real downside to Windows Phone (and iOS) is it isn't as free and open as Android. That is, all software (free and purchased) go through the Zune Marketplace. There isn't tons of free apps on there like Android has. At the same time, Windows Phone has a better path forward (Silverlight) than Android (Java).

Does Win7 Phone use Hotmail to sync contacts? So, in theory I could export my Gmail vCards and just migrate them all to Hotmail.

I have a windows 6.5 phone, less than 2 years old. Microsoft no longer supports the "my phone" online back up system, nor will continue to work on fixing the many bugs still present.

The manufacturer, HTC is apologetic but of no use in fixing the issues.

My recomendation to anyone bedazzled by windows mobile is to reconsider, Microsoft do not support mobile like they do PC software, you may find yourself ditched by the roadside one day.

Yeah, Windows Mobile is EoL. Windows Phone is based around Silverlight and multi-touch where Windows Mobile required a stylus. In short, Windows Mobile is obsolete. You need a new phone. XD

You have to have a Windows .NET ID (Hotmail or Live) and that's where it gets/sets all the contacts from. It does support many email providers including POP3/SMTP. Not sure about vCards.
