Can't reset or update iPhone 3G

just shows the "cable" and iTunes logo.
Yes, i've tried to google, tried the DFU or whatever it's called.
No success, need to reset the phone. Any clues?

Have you tried reinstalling itunes? I've recently had to do that due to issues caused by the latest update of itunes.

Thanks, solved the problem. It was not compatible with 4.3.2 (had to use 4.2.1).
I think the owner had the phone "jailbreaked", since I found Cydia on it.
Actually tried to advice him in getting the iPhone 4 instead..
