Hey all, just recently got in touch with some ppl from my past and was reminded about a documentary I was in. Its called Turning Away http://www.onf-nfb.gc.ca/eng/collection/film/?id=33481 Its mostly focused on 2 individuals, a girl named Darci and a man called Blair. But being a documentary there are several bits with me in it. I went by the name Alien when i was homeless and this film gives a glimpse of my street life in the mid to late 90s. Im going to be purchasing a copy of this and have permission from the director (who was glad to find me alive on FB last night) to either stream it or make a few copies for friends. So if anyone is interested ill have the film in about a week or 2 and may even put an ISO on a FTP site if i can get permission to do that too.

You can also find the movie on IMDB but the details are sparse. the site i linked has a more detailed info link. Also look up the man who made the film Craig Chivers

being a doc about street life, there is illicit drug use, not that im condoning that, but it was what it was back in those days. I'll update the thread as soon as the DVD comes in the mail.

That's pretty amazing. I think a lot of people don't realize that most of them are one paycheck away from being homeless too - although I think that message is finally sinking in. There's also this idea that they're all homeless because they want to be and/or they're mentally ill. Mental illness may be more prevalent, but I think it's only a very tiny minority that prefer to live on the streets.

Anyway, sounds good. Thanks.

ya family issues pushed me to the streets back then in Toronto, but going to Vancouver changed everything for me ( i loved living on the coast and was very happy there other than the drug use i was into). Both cities helped mold me into the person I am today and I would never change the life experiences over those 8 years for anything. That is partially why im outspoken on certain issues, i lived those issues and i believe that if i can make it back to a decent life with a loving wife and 2 kids, that almost anyone can (part of the reason i yell at the TV while watching Intervention on A & E).

I look back on those years as crucial to my development as a human being as i learned many a lesson on the way the world (and the ppl in it) work.
