View Full Version : Arranging a living room

As some may know (most will not:)) I bought a new home. I'm completely clueless as how to arrange the living room though. Friends so far are useless. It's 3,65Mx11M, windows on both ends.

So far my own vision is stuck at about 4 meters from 1 window, there should be two couches, a small table and the screen and all. I'm thinking of a desk somewhere, perhaps on the back of the couch placed in the width so I can easily connect it for gaming on the big screen and such. That leaves me with about 6-7Mx3,65 of empty space in my living room. I don't really need a diner table there as there is space for one in the kitchen and I live alone. Other computers will be placed in the secondary bedroom (=hobby room). So what the hell am I going to use the space for?

For the feetpeople (opposed to meters, not related to fetishes) 3,65M is about 12 feet, roughly 12x20-24 feet of space.

I shall draw you a picture. Any odd things about the room like a fire place that need to be considered?

Edited it to show my current ideas. I think an extra sofa is rather pointless, I don't really own a TV, I use a beamer. So it has to project on the wall, opposite of sofa 1. I figured to put the desk behind the sofa so I could easily connect controllers and video out. Thus without the separate TV and third sofa, it's all empty.

Oh, and there is another door, in fact I didn't bother to draw another door to the balcony next to one window.

draw me a picture showing layout, location of doors, windows, power points, locations of ethernet/telephone sockets (or cables if you're running them loose) and such.

Oh and ofc, which way the doors open.

I already did, power isn't a real issue, I can solve such things. Network so far doesn't exist, just the entry point which is at the upper right of the drawing. Have to put a cable next to the window there and put it through the wall since the secondary bedroom is there.

Just invite your mother over she will tell you were everything should go lord knows my mum did with my place. =/

I could do that, though I'd be single for the rest of my life then. Not kidding, she will waste my social life. And the problem isn't where everything should go, it's what should go. I have no clue what to put in the room :)

You could always build a bar!

Hmmm, not a completely bad idea to have a bar. The idea already ran through my mind to do that with the kitchen, though I feel that's a bit too small and isolated. The wall between the kitchen and living room carriers the roof (and three floors above) so I couldn't remove that.

Like I said, dining > kitchen. I live alone and am a pig, so having a big table isn't needed nor very useful.

I should look into the prices of a tap and the likes, got a brother and father who are carpenters so constructing one from some ancient looking wood (saloon style, doh) could be done.

@Mussels, beamer mate.

put the bar on the side where the dining room table (in mussels drawing) is bc if you have a bar and your living alone a table will be come a place to just through shit on and it'll get really messy in your house

I can read things you delete :)

I agree that a table will become the hill of junk, standing tall in the center looking down at all other junk. Obvious the other junk will fear the majestic hill of everlasting junk. That would eventually be it's name.

So far barrels of beer seem more expensive than bottles, still looking though.

You could make the table into a bar as well, kinda like a fixed tap. I mean comeon, a table and with a free beer tap... awesome.

This should be the whole home btw. Bta assumed at least one door would lead to the outside world, it does not thus no privacy issues to take care of.

Just as a friendly reminder, as this rarely crosses peoples minds when doing / buying things.

Anything cool you put in your house, will soon turn uncool. Reason: Friends.

Things can get old fast if its all a friend does / comes over for / etc. A bar is tremendously cool, but it is the kind of thing that flocks people to your place on your dime (unless you get smart and charge the buggers).

For some this is fine, for others not. It also depends on the purchase / addition too. For instance, I regret ever having bought Nerf Guns upon moving out as most times when friends come over I spend a fair amount of time collecting darts afterwards. Not to sure why I bought them either. However I don't mind friends coming over otherwise to play video games.

Still something to think about though.

DanTheBanjoman
07-16-2009, 09:35 PM
Trust me, when I consider something "cool" the opinion of my friends really doesn't matter. As for people coming over to get free beer, such people aren't welcome. I know plenty of guys who are around when we order beer and are gone by the time it's their turn. Me and some other friend don't give those people any beer. As for cleaning up Nerf darts, I don't mind such things, I probably won't even bother picking them up :)
I already shot a load of plastic balls through my house and I don't even live there . Then again I'll have to get rid of them once the floor goes in.

Its not so much their opinion its how often they want to do that particular activity. I like air hockey (or fuse-ball) but don't want to play the game whenever a friend comes over. But yes, keep away the guys that bum beer off you.

Quite true, I'll most likely get sick of whatever big table I can place there, be it air hockey as you state, pool, ping pong or whatever.

Looks like something for kids that breaks before I'm even slightly drunk.

A colleague mentioned a jukebox, that's something I'm keeping in mind, and bta suggested bean bags, those are great as well. Good to fight against when drunk. (they win) Specially since I'm looking for something to hang vinyl to the wall in the entry hall. Would look great.

Or a shag pad. Lock the door to the inner workings of your house to keep the whore's prying eyes away. If you like her enough (read: she doesn't rob you blind) you can eventually reveal its more than just 1 room. If she's of questionable motive (read: she robs you blind) then she may not loot the rest of your house while you're passed out, only the room she has access to.

it's not bad but there's not enough things in the options, but that's just me,
things like the sofa in that pic are actually a bed

hm i'm just doing a bit of a background check first, it seems to be genuine enjoy

anyway did you get a chance to look at that software?

yes it does come in handy every now and then but is there anything else out there that's similar to it

:edit out if you want:
(yes saying this will likely get me in trouble but i wonder if it could be dissasembled to add some more bits like proper sofa's tv's pc's )

http://www.snesorama.us/board/images/smilies/scratchchin7ad.gifhm a huge lcd screen for multi media pc and gaming (although i don't no what tv will do it all at a good enough resolution )

by the way the above software gives you the ability to pan tilt and zoom
not bad for a freebie
