So I was happily browsing Newegg, contemplating whether or not to buy a new CPU, and decided to check my bank account to see if I even could buy it and be ok on funds. To my surprise I'm out well over $300 that I have no idea where it went. Called up Wachovia and they explain that because I have a student account under my stepmother, any sort of transfer or overdraft she does, whether knowingly or not, gets taken out of my account if available funds are there. The issue is cleared up now, she's going in the morning to take her name off the account and replace the funds. Still, pretty gay in my opinion...they didn't ask for permission from either party(given, her name appears on both accounts). What if I needed that money RIGHT now?

More like your stepmother boned you. :(

Wachovia, by doing an automatic transfer, probably saved you (rather, her) at least $40 in overdraft fees. It is a feature of joint accounts.

If you needed that money now, you would have to call the bank and request an emergency loan. If your credit is good and the amount isn't high, they probably would have given you one.

I didn't need the money now. She knew she had overdrafted, but her account was good now. What she didn't know is that they had taken money from my account because of hers going negative. All because she went over $4.22.

You'd be surprised some of the shit you *cough* "agree to" without having the slightest clue.

Many years ago I had an account and a student loan with the same bank. I also happened to work for them. I don't remember the details, but either they over paid me or I was late with a payment or something, and they jacked my account for what they believed I owed.

Turned out, in one of the piles of paper relating to each of the 3 relationships I had with this bank (account, loan, job), I had given them the right to make such deductions under certain circumstances.

Nobody bothers to read the shit they sign. I understand that since there really isn't any point. If you don't sign, you don't get the loan or credit card or whatever, so WTF. And even if you were feeling industrious, it's probably not going to make a whole lot of sense anyway.

But sometimes, like in this instance, you might have noticed this account sharing feature and thought that maybe it wasn't a great idea. Or maybe you wouldn't have cared, but at least you would have known what sorts of things to be on the look out for.

In my book, it's still a toss up as to whether or not it is worth the effort though.

Yeah exactly. I'm just glad it wasn't some fishy activity and I'm getting the money back. I almost shat brix when I was expecting to see ~$475 but instead saw $125!
