Mostly pointless extra's. Commentary, removed scenes and whatnot.

Sometimes its a good thing. For instance probably over 2 hours worth of material for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Sometimes its a bad thing. For instance probably over 2 hours worth of material for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Just up to you on whether or not its worth your money.

A less heard of movie: sex drive had the unrated edition. At the start the producers said this wont be your usual unrated movie with an extra boob or two. That there will be lots of boob. So throughout the movie you'll see random naked woman edited into the movie.... guys too.

I don't normally care enough about a movie to want to see other versions. But the one instance I can recall off hand was the director's cut of Blade Runner. It was still the same movie of course, but the ending was completely different and there were bits and pieces I expected to see but didn't (and vice-versa).
If you're really into a movie, I would definitely check out anything resembling a director's cut. As for other so-called "extras", I think you either need to have no life of any kind or really worship the director and/or writer and/or whomever. I've been tempted to check out some background on some of David Lynch's stuff, but I'm not into it enough.
I think I looked at some of the extras for Babylon 5 and it was just tedious.

Sometimes it's a really good thing to be unrated. Live Free or Die hard is an excellent example. The normal PG13 version has no serious violence or profanity, where the unrated one does. Yippie ki yay mother fucker!

Agreed. the unrated version is much better. felt more like a die hard movie watching that.

I always buy Director's Cut, Extended, or Uncut editions over the normal edition. Other than that, most special editions are just a fancy box and some extra commentary track and outakes and crap.
