View Full Version : Looking For Fast/Aggressive Metal
DaveK

I've been getting into metal quite a bit recently. I've always liked metal but have never listened to it much, I've frequented a rock bar for the past 2 years but outside of that I don't have much to listen to. My library consists of Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine, Children Of Bodom, Dope, HIM, Korn, Metallica, Slipknot and Stemm.
Don't judge, it's just a few bands I've gotten into over the years. Lately I've been looking for fast and aggressive stuff so I'm looking for some suggestions. I'm looking for more modern metal from the 90s and up. I can't really get into stuff from the 80s. I want it aggressive, but just not too screamo where it's just noise. If I can make out words they're screaming it's all good. Hell they can be roaring about puppies for all I care lol.
This is some of the stuff I like for example:

9sTQ0QdkN3Q
BXY7kmAjjFc

Speaking of which, I'm listening to Kataklysm right now, so might as well mention them. Good live too, as are the other bands I mentioned. Hmm, I should go to another show soon, haven't been to one in a few months or so.
edit: lol whaddya know, Kataklysm will be in Cleveland at one of my favorite venues on 8/27 with Vital Remains a couple other bands I haven't heard

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven are played regularly in my home. Megadeth - Rust in Peace is one of the best albums released in my opinion. I love everything slipknot, five finger death punch I'd good. Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding is another favorite of mine.
You might give deicide a try. Also, Killswitch Engage End of Heartache (not 1 0 0 percent on thus one's name) is awesome.

Well when I say metal, I mean metal and anything similar to it. I just use it as a generic term in my music library lol.
First up I'm checking out Killswitch Engage, they're more modern and I keep seeing them pop up around around friends so I'll give them a listen for a few days and report back.

Remember, as a general rule of thumb, if you want to be a metalhead, you must avoid anything even remotely "mainstream" like it was the plague.

Besides, I hate death metal so can't in good conscience recommend anything like it.
Remember, as a general rule of thumb, if you want to be a metalhead, you must avoid anything even remotely "mainstream" like it was the plague.
IMO that is silly. To me its the same kind of puffed up attitude that I see with Nirvana fans who think that hating "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or even the whole Nevermind album is what the "real" fans do. Drives me nuts. Same with Metallica fans who hate "Enter Sandman". Just because it has appeal outside the genre doesn't mean that you have to turn against it... bleh, mini rant ends.

I gave them a quick listen and although they're the type of sound I was looking for, nothing really makes them stand out. When listening to them it was just blah blah blah. Went to YouTube for some Cannibal Corpse, listened to Make Them Suffer and Hammer Smashed Face, couldn't understand a fuckin' word he was saying but oddly enough I didn't mind lol.
Maybe I've been going about this all wrong. Shit, I have my modern metal with melodic breakdown choruses...hell, after 2 songs and looking at their album art I'm sold on Cannical Corpse. I liked death metal with Necro and Ill Bill, this will definately work...
Oddly enough on the topic of mainstream, maybe that's why Killswitch isn't doing it for me? Most music I've listened to nobody else likes. Everything from old school, underground and death rap to hard dance. I like having different tastes than everyone which is why it really annoys me when people copy me lol

Btw Devil Wears Prada was really cool till they dropped their last album. Its just thrash growl and scream. I like to hear lyrics too and guitar riffs so I didnt get their new album. Imo it really needs to be a mix of clear vocals and scream both.

For real, I was pretty surprised too. Death metal is pretty awesome, I'm not a huge fan of it though. I do get down with a few bands. Cannibal Corpse is going to be in Seattle the day after my birthday. I'm probably gonna go. Saw them at the Mayhem Festival a few years ago.
Also a quote from Chris Barnes' wikipedia page that made me laugh:
While on the set of Ace Ventura, Barnes admitted to Jim Carrey that the way his neck contorted while doing "Fire Marshall Bill" (a skit that was done for the sketch comedy series, In Living Color) grossed him out. Carrey responded to the statement with "What? This? This grosses you out? All that shit you write and that little thing grosses you out?"

nope.. just stating fact.. Killing is my Business was released in 85.. Kill em all was released in 83.. Dave mustaine helped write some of the songs on metallica's 1st album before he got thew boot..so its only natural that these same riff finds its way to some of the songs in a band where he has most of the song writing duties
BTW.. Kill em all is a better album in songs and production than Killing is my business... Shrapnel was great at getting metal to the masses but did not have the production or spending power that the kill em all team had.. think it was Elkectra
I listen to both Metallica and megadeth.. Stopped listening to anything later than the black album for Metallica and either rust in peace or symphony for megadeth.. LAST of the best albums by both bands
For Metallica.. Some say it is Master of Puppets is the last best album by them.. Im one of them.. LOL but the black album and ..and justice for all does have a few good songs on them too
Best Megadeth album by far would either be Rust in Peace or Peace Sells....Symphony is sorta a toss up
My favorite hard core metal band would be slayer or anthrax..Metallica and Megadeth are just Metal..
I also like Death Angel or Dead Horse... Those are really ole school hard core.. Dead Horse ESPECIALLY

I would have made fun of you every day at school.
I wouldn't care. Or if you managed to piss me off, I'd smack you with a lightsaber. I wore a couple different SW costumes to school on a few occasions (usually around halloween during a designated week for costumes) and one time somebody did piss me off and I chased them down the hall with a lightsaber lol it was hilarious.
Just FYI I've never made fun of anyone intentionally except on this forum.
You're missin' out, it's a lot of fun.

but fyi... several guitar parts are identical to some songs on Metalica's Kill 'Em All.. yep.. LOL..
Dave Mustaine wrote a lot of the music on Kill 'Em All, and I also believe some made it onto Ride the Lightning as well.
Just bought The Bleeding again. Waiting on my iPod to sync. Booyeah.
