I am thinking about trying to get into some anime for the first time. What series should I start with?

Cowboy Bebop. Old school, but it would be a good start.

It's easier to start with movies tho. Ninja Scroll is a good movie to start with.

Depends what your bag is... for instance if you like computers and sh1t go ghost in the shell or akira, if you like big robots with f@rk off shinny guns go patlabor or evangelion or if your into old skool death and destruction go hellsing or cowboy bebop. but whatever you do....never..... ever....... start watching onepeice!!!! :D
I started with Dragonball and City Hunter. Like roji said, it depends on what you like. Also on the type of humour you're into...

my all time fave - ghost in the shell. But this requires a certain amount of concentration. Most is easy to follow but some parts (like the scenes of the online chatroom) require your full attention. Also, if you then go to the second series and movie, there are some discontinuities that might put you off. Also, there are a couple of lesbian robot scenes that just get a passing nod - extremely frustrating. And the small tank robots can be a little too cutesie at times.
Evangelion - for blowing shit up and big fuckin' guns. It gets pretty melodramatic in parts esp. toward the end but it's easy enough to overlook.
Cowboy Beebop - the graphics might not be up to modern standards, but it is a classic and very good. It would be a close second behind GITS. The story is like something out of a Sam Spade novel (old-timey detective story) but I think that adds to the charm.
Witch Hunter Robin - if you like occult/fanatasy plus scifi synthesis and appreciate ambiance as much as cool grphics and a good story.
Full Metal Alchemist - good fantasy/magic/occult story. Can be a little silly at times but the creator tries to balance the serious and absurd.
Once you find something that you like I would check out anime planet (http://www.anime-planet.com/) for more recommendations. There are other sites mention in the OP too.

Don't start. You'll eventually find yourself buying a WD Green 1+ TB every month or so.

Hahahahahaha! That's about true. I need to buy myself my 3rd 1TB F1 for just for this rig alone. That doesn't count the other 4 computers in the house, or the soon to be server/voip/htpc/torrent box. lol.

depending on your keyboard, the delete key is near the upper right side.
Just sayin' :p

Blasphemy. I haven't deleted anything since last year. And I don't delete a series unless I replace it with a better version, hate it to death, or know for damn sure I already have it backed up. :D

Hmm my Terabyte HD can keep up at the moment. Although the complete DBZ and City Hunter Series take up quite some Gigabytes. DBZ alone is 530 episodes a ~200MB. Half of that HD is just Anime, and I don't even have that much series.
By the way to the OP; If you like genius comedy with a nice and somewhat touching story (towards the end especially), try Great Teacher Onizuka.

I also do not belive in delete key where series storage is concerned im at 526GB of anime and rising atm. I lost some about 2 years ago so it would be bigger but well there you have it :D
Also if you like mind trips go FLCL
