Donald Driver's championship mettle goes way beyond his Super Bowl XLV ring with the Green Bay Packers or his Mirror Ball trophy for winning Dancing With The Stars but extends straight to the heart.

He held his annual charity softball game Sunday -- another tip of the cap, Donald -- in Appleton, Wis., and was lobbing his hat and wristbands into the crowd. As he headed to the dugout, he tossed a cleat toward a young boy in a Packers jersey, but a woman holding a replica Mirror Ball trophy bolted for the shoe and ultimately yanked it away from the kid. She later posed with it on her Facebook page.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel captured the sequence on video, and Driver reached out to the boy, 12-year-old Stephen Wagner, and his family on Twitter and got some assistance from Journal Sentinel reporter Tyler Dunne.

Wagner has been thrust into his 15 minutes of fame since Sunday as media outlets glommed onto the story.

"I was really excited and hoping to catch whatever he would throw," Wagner told Good Morning America. "I felt like it was thrown to me, and she didn't have to do it like that. I think she could have been nicer for that."

Wagner's mother says the woman has since apologized to the family, saying she thought Driver was aiming the shoe her way.

But good news. Driver has since connected with and met Wagner and given him his own pair of cleats and other Packers swag while even attempting to tamp down criticism of the overzealous woman. Driver tweeted Monday night: "Let's remember the woman who grabbed the cleat from Stephen is human. We all make mistakes. Stephen is happy and that's what matters most!"

Spoken like a true champion.

This is awesome. We hear all of the stupid shit that athletes do. It's good to remember that not all professional athletes are idiots.
