Picked up a 2012 Ford Escape today. Pretty nice little SUV. Its just an XLS, but has a stick

I'm pretty excited and the wife loves it. Only bad thing so far is its a stick so relearning that myself and having to teach the wife sucks.

I'm doing good with the stick now the wife still has some issues, but she is learning. Her thing is she panics when it rolls back a little on hills.

I like it so far and even with learning a stick its getting about 22-23MPG according to its calculator thing.

Nice stuff. The rollback on hills is what freaks everyone out. Tell her to pull the parking brake on hills until she gets used to taking off smoothly. Helped my sister out tremendously.

Parking brake is like a truck its on the floor not a hand lever. So its a pain I have just been parking her on the driveway and trying to get her to hold it.

Ah, crap. I thought the escape had them up on the console like a car. My first hill experience was a do or die moment. I was on a steep hill, the car wasn't in my name, was out of license and inspection and of all things, a friggin cop pulled up RIGHT behind me.

Now, give it too much gas and burn off and the cop pulls me over and proceeds to give me several tickets. Let it roll back, same result, but with an additional ticket for hitting him. Stall and look like an idiot.

I took off like a seasoned pro and never feared a hill again.

Got to love that sweet spot. Where you can balance the car on the clutch, no brake or gas required.

Destroys your clutch after a while, but feels damn good.

on a hill with a stick shift you just need to put your right foot at 90degrees and on the acc and the brake at the same time. heel on the acc. toes on the brake.

it takes a lot of stalling and getting used to

And for a beginner, that is a great way to get into a wreck. Panic and let off the clutch, you go into traffic, panic and let off the brake and you go backwards into the car behind you.

Personally, I go clutch in, right foot on brake, then when the light changes, I quickly go right foot on the gas and left foot releasing the clutch. With that method, I barely roll at all.

When i was 14 my Dad took me out in his International Scout and parked on a hill. He told me to take the drivers seat. Once I did he instructed me what to do and after rolling back several times I got it. He patted my back and said I was ready to drive. lol

Same here.
Although I've stalled the engine quite a couple of times when I'm driving a car with a small block and the AC is on.
You really notice the lack of power.
If the car has a diesel engine...it's way easier...

Most cars in America have pedal setups that do not allow for heel-toeing. To avoid lawsuits, the pedals are too far apart, or are at too different of a height to do it. You just have to learn to be quick.

It sounds weird to hear Americans talking about driving manual cars. Just sounds like a complete novelty, at least here in the UK everyone drives manual so it just sounds completely alien to hear people driving it for the first time.

AKA: Fucking morons ruining it for the rest of us.

Thankfully, my Sentra Spec V does not have this problem. I heel-toe all the time. Downshifting to slow not only saves my brakes, but the rev matching during downshift saves my clutch. Win-win. I have the original 130k mile clutch in my car, still with zero slippage when I get on it hard.

We have a 2003 ford escape XLT and it has a DOHC 3.0L. It is a nice SUV to be a front wheel drive.
