the fuel stays in there, the rods just absorb the radiation. only in the worst case scenarios does the fuel need to be removed, and thats a pretty shit situation to be in.

Something; anything happens. Natural disaster, human error, terrorizers, nobody to run the plant, etc and the reactor suffers a meltdown and a huge area of land becomes uninhabitable for thousands of years.
There are over 400 nuclear reactors all over the world. Yeah, great long term plan we got going here on planet earth.

Quote:
Nuclear power has the lowest fatality per terawatt hour of all power sources: http://nextbigfuture.com/2011/03/dea...gy-source.html Nuclear also has near-zero pollution. Most of those 400 nuclear reactors are 40+ years old. Only two major incidents occured where radiation was leaked (Chernobyl NPP 3 and Fukishima 1 NPP)--both because of flawed designs (RMBK is a bad design altogether and engineers building nuclear power plants in Japan need to account for power failure, earthquake, and tsunami with systems in place to install external backups should all those systems fail) that can easily be corrected in future reactors.

radiation != pollution
The only pollution comes from mining uranium, enriching uranium, transportation of uranium, the rare instance backup diesel generators have to run, and the initial construction of the nuclear power plant. Once it is operational, it produces no pollution.
