Real Madrid building $1 billion resort island in the United Arab Emirates

MADRID, March 22 (Reuters) - Nine-times European champions Real Madrid have unveiled plans to open a branded holiday resort in the United Arab Emirates due to open in January 2015.

‘Real Madrid Resort Island’ is a $1 billion dollar venture with the RAK Marjan Island Football Investment Fund and the government of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, developed under the club’s brand.

No further financial details were given.

A presentation at the Bernabeu on Thursday showed plans for sports facilities, a marina, luxury hotels and villas, an amusement park, a club museum and a 10,000-seat stadium with one side open to the sea.

“It is a decisive and strategic step that will strengthen our institution in the Middle East and Asia,” said Real president Florentino Perez.

The 430,000-square metre leisure facility is expected to attract around one million visitors in 2015.

Real said the artificial island’s location put it equidistant between Europe and the Far East, adding that more than half of their estimated 300 million followers were based in Asia. (Reporting by Mark Elkington, editing by Tony Jimenez)

That sounds wild. I'd love to see it if it actually works out.

of course they do, static climate = less to plan for = cheaper than it would be in other places. Besides its on the water.

It's an unbearable climate half of the year:

Being surrounded by salt water means having to deal constantly with erosion and corrosion. It's cheap to build on nuclear waste sites but that doesn't mean it is wise to do so.

They also got to ship in virtually all of their supplies because the land can't produce much/anything.

Actually, no:

Except for the average high temperature in June which Phoenix and Dubai tie at 100F, Dubai has all higher average low and high temperatures and often not by a small margin.

The difference between AZ and Dubai doesn't matter all that much, since it's the Winter months that are different. The winter months in Dubai are like summer here, maybe a bit warmer, so thats not bad, it's those summer months that matter since they are the hottests, and those basically line up with AZ. Personally I wouldn't go there in the summer, I'd go in Jan - Apr, but someone from a warmer climate might not care as much as I do.

I live in mesa
http://www.weather.com/weather/wxcli...Z0166&clocid2=

though true the average does go down when they factor in different years, we've trended 110+ highs consistently from june 21st through august 31st the past 3 years with the od rainfall breaking it up every blue moon.

sure we don't have the salt water but the desert is very kind to buildings overall. The only thing you have to contend with is dry rot and that's easily accounted for. Not like other places with actual weather variations.

You got Dubai beat in the summer, not the rest of the year. Your lows are also lower than Dubai all year round.

@ remixed I'll give you that, a couple was arreseted their for kissing last year. You could pick several better countries for ease of access and leniency of law.

@ford

yeah that's because we have plants in our desert, they help cool us down at night and the rest of the year. We also go below freezing in the winter months (a good 20-30 days of the winter) it doesn't look like they get anywhere close to that. Theres over 100 degrees farenheight between our record low and record high... come to think of it, that really negates my earlier comparison based on the argument that steady high temperatures make its easier on buildings.

Well that right there says to me it's not an unbearable climate. With a beach for swimming it should be perfect for those that don't mind the heat in summer.

My point was there is no escaping the heat in Dubai without A/C. Their electricity comes from imported uranium.

But there is if they build it like that, they have a beach. And I'm sure they will have AC, so climate close to Mesa, but has water, sounds habitable to me.
