Have done two family road trips like that, though that was 14 and 16 years ago. Any advice I would have it probably out of date.

Where are you starting from?
Camping, hotels, sleeping in car or mix of everything?

Basic stuff. Make sure that your oil is changed, coolant is topped off, tires, including the spare are good. If your timing belt is old, you might want to change it as well. Pack at least a gallon of coolant and two quarts of oil for the car. Get an emergency roadside kit. I like to pack a small toolkit with me.

Once that is done, make sure that you have plenty of water in the car. Also make damned sure that you bring some CASH with you. I know a lot of people rely on credit cards, but some places don't take them, or they are out of order.

Pick hotels with inside doors and don't drop the soap at rest stops

I always forget the sunscreen...lol
I'm a trucker so I'm used to having a dark red left arm...

Yeah about the anti diarrhea med....Water isn't the same from one state to the next...Take NEO we don't get that Norwalk Virus that keeps taking down cruise ships because we are immune as we live with it...I'm half tempted to say that someone around here carries it on cruise ships lol....

I drove across country once. I'll never do that again. left El Cajon, CA in the evening and hit 3000 miles as I pulled into Clarks Summit, PA two days later. I averaged around 95 mph, got one speeding ticket in Arkansas, slept once for 4 hours, only stopped for gas, and took a butt load of 357 mags to stay awake. My passenger seat and floor was filled with food and drinks so i wouldn't have to stop for those.

I took the 8 east to 17 north to 40 east all the way across till I hit VA and then went north.

It was one of the craziest trips I've made and one I'll not ever repeat. That was around 18 years ago.
