Got an Audi

Yep, decided to try imports out. Found this one pretty cheap but it needs some work.

It's a 1988 Audi 90. Pretty decent shape for it's age, the body doesn't have much rust at all.

- 2.3L 5 cylinder
- 5 speed
- Not quattro, so FWD

Keeps cutting out, won't start unless I give it starting fluid, also runs like crap. Thinking its the fuel pump and it's not getting enough gas. New rotor and shit like that.

I'll get pics once the weather clears up

Why would you buy that piece of shit? Those cars are horrible, they break down often, parts are expensive... Sell it now.

What is it with you buying basket cases?

Buy a goddamn Cavalier/Escort/(insert any other generic American economy car here) that's in real working order instead of wasting your money on these money pits you keep buying.

This is not wise car buying for someone on a tight budget. These are the kinds of vehicles you buy when you have the means to restore them.

+1. Just sold a 98 Cavalier 5 speed with 94K miles for $1800. It needed nothing.

Edit: Holy crap, I posted my 3991 post in 3991v's thread!

Turd cars, audi is still having issues like BMW does with the fuel system from what I have read.

If you are dead set against having a reliable car buy a newer car as its parts will be available and cheaper.

I like a project, have my parents' vehicles to use till I get this one going, but I'm thinking about parting it out on Ebay and making some money on it. Either that or get it running and sell it before something else breaks on it. Either way, I don't plan on keeping it too long (Just getting a 30 day temp registration for it)

I'm fucking junking it. Fuel pump, filter, cleaned injectors, new coil, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, everything. Can't get it going. I'm just going to stick to 70's trucks from now on...

Well that was a pretty terrible car to try out imports with.

I'd try to find an older diesel jetta instead, atleast it would be worth having.

There are plenty of vehicles out there that run great that do have more electronics than a 70s rust bucket.

This, but otherwise both WV and Audi are good.

Its also more power and longer lasting motors with better gas mileage. There is a reason for all that crap. Learn to work on the new stuff because you are going to run out of salvagable 70s crap here soon.

So glad I scrapped it, wasn't worth it. Just jumped on it for some reason, didn't even research it or anything.

Power and Gas Mileage I agree with, but as far as lasting longer, eh I'd say thats really a toss up. Theres a reason the 302 and 350 were around for almost 50 years, and it wasn't because they were unreliable.

So was the oil burning 305. Just because there are good motors floating around doesn't mean there are even more duds.

And that brings us back to this Audi, theres duds of every type of injection and ignition type, don't think it's isolated to rockered, carbed, hei motors. Heck even a 305 was a good motor, 350's valve seals go like crazy as well, my truck blows a good sized blue cloud everytime it starts, but being at 300k, thats completely fine by me, just gives a bit of extra lubrication on the cylinder walls when it starts, hell probably why it's lasted so long
