Looking for a well priced tablet?

I was down in the states last week for a conference and one of my coworkers found this device that can be a fullblown tablet with a little work.

Barnes and Nobel sells the Nook Color for $250. It's an ereader with wifi, a web browser and runs on a limited Android OS 2.1. He looked online and found a community that has built ROMs to flash it with an SD card to full Android 2.1/2.2/2.3 and 3.0(still in early stages).

I got one myself, and must say it was a damn good deal. I've tried 2.2 and 2.3, I'm going back to 2.2 as I found 2.3 a bit flaky.

The nook color does not have 3G. But you can tether it via bluetooth to a device such as a phone and get internet anyway. Haven't tried this with my iphone yet.

Or you could get an Archos 7 for even less.

Motorola Xoom is probably the best choice if you don't want to get locked into a max-i-pad. Color nook is the best choice for the money.

Yes but the screen on the nook is a much higher resolution at 1024x600 compared to 800x480

Anything Archos = crap

I think the The Asus eee pad transformer will only be $399 at launch, which isn't bad at all considering the hardware and features.

If you're really considering the Xoom, just go with the iPad 2. I've used both and seen the features and you literally get nothing more with the Xoom except a worse interface.

I'd rather save $50.

GF just got a Color Nook. Will see how she likes it once it's charged up. She seems excited about the zoom feature of the touch screen. And at least this can handle pdf, doc and other files without conversion - unlike the shitty Ectaco Jet - POS.

That's an interesting observation. the matrix of wires (if that's what they still use) must be a lot denser on the ipod, which would make sense since the screen is so much smaller.

Anyway, she got the latest update to the OS to load (finally) and she's absolutely ecstatic about her nook. OK, that sounded dirty, but you know what I mean. She has Nitro PDF and has been loading up all of her custom pdf files plus tons of books. She's even been surfing on it.

I'm a little worried though since I think her mind will be blown the first time she walks into a B&N store with it and sees what's available. 'Nurse! 3cc's of Thorazine stat! This woman has gone into Nook overload.'

I just scored a Nook Color (Nookie LOLOLOL) for $125 shipped!!!!!!! It is one of the newer 1.2 versions as the guy purchased it about 2 months ago and just picked up a HP TouchPad so wanted to sell the NC!!! He has already flashed the ROM with the latest CM7.1.x that is stable. It is overclocked to 1.3ghz and includes a B&N leather case and 8gb external micro SD card.

Kind of confused though, on many of the large tablet sites people are dual booting the NC with the original NC operating system and CM7.1 on the external card. Wondering if I shouldn't flash the NC back to the original OS and install the CM7.1 on the SD card. All a person has to do is boot with the SD card installed and it automatically boots to it if there is an OS on it. Shut down, remove the SD and boot again, and it will go the original NC OS.

Wondering if anyone has done this or not?

Granted, unless a person grabs a good Sandisk class 6 to 10 chip the CM7.1 will run very slow. However if it is installed and a quality SD card is supposedly runs on par with the original OS.

I was about to say "When the fuck did you get a GF?" but then I realized that was an old post. Still though, I don't think I even knew you had a gf at the time of that post lol

From what I've seen, the Kindle Fire is in the same ballpark as the Nook. It can be rooted to run full blown 2.2 or 2.3, and it's currently selling for $199. I looked at one a few days ago, and I was quite impressed.
