Looks like a show about a typical playthrough of Crusader Kings II. LOLOLOL

"Houses" fighting for the Iron Throne: Noble families of the various kingdoms of Europe.

"Two threats" outside of the Seven Kingdoms: Muslims and Mongols (albeit the Muslims are in the south and Mongols would suddenly come from the east with their uber powerful units).

The "Houses" are noble families, I assume barons/dukes or any other high rank in the feudal system. So I think that a comparison with the British civil wars (e.g. War of the Roses) is better than comparing it with medieval Europe as a whole. Even though they are referred to as kings, they are actually dukes/barons ruling over a semi-autonomous dukedom being under rule of a king.

Regarding the extra-national threats; I do not think that White Walkers are comparable to Muslims. Neither does the Dothraki religion seem like Islam, although I did not read the books yet so I am not sure (the TV series sort of ignores the religions a bit although there are references to some gods). I think that if it resembles any real religion, than the Dothraki have a faith comparable to the Mongol religion from before Timudzjin's rise to power as Genghis Khan (under his rule, there was religious freedom in order to let conquered nations keep their own religion. It was much later than that, that the Mongol Empire became Islamic and fell apart into several khanates, AFAIK). Even though you are right about the resemblance of the Dothraki to the Mongols as a people.

I did say "Crusader Kings II" so it doesn't really correspond to the War of the Roses. I doubt the War of the Roses would ever happen, although you can say that it's already happening between the de Normandie and Godwin instead of Lancaster and York. LOL

GRRM has said that the plot is loosely based on the War of the Roses but just that loosely, he doesn't want any direct historical parallels

wait episode 2 is up? its not airing until Sunday...

It's on usenet - posted about an hour ago - see the link in my previos post. I'm sure it will start popping up elsewhere but it might get DMCA'd too. IDK.

I'm about a third of the way through it (keep jumping back and forth between GOT and green lantern), but I'm bummed since the rip doesn't have closed captioning. Even though my hearing is fine, I can't always make out the dialog. It has to be properly enunciated. So I always listen to tv with CC on and I really miss it when it's not an option.

Watched the first ep and it seems the "wildlings" or White Walkers are humanoid, but eerily reminds me of the phaerimm (thought to have been extinct for thousands of years) when the Shaar Wall was breached near Evereska. While the Dothraki are similar to the orcs under Obould Many-Arrows, or the various barbarians north of Waterdeep.

Bumblebee did not say "hot" or "attractive", she said "cute".

Spoiler, Entropy13 better doesn't read this (just highlight the text to read it):

Gandry (I might misspell it) is a bastard of Robert Baratheon (he worked for that smith first, whom was visited by Ned Stark and John Arryn) and therefore his head will roll if Geoffrey and Cersei manage to catch him. And so were those babies and dark-haired boys at Peter Baelish's brothel, which have been slaughtered in se2ep1. BTW, Gandry says himself, somewhere at the end of season 1, that "my master got sick of me" when he meets Arya, so I think that the smith he worked for had seen it coming and sent him away.
In the North they would not be save however, because they would probably be tracked down thereto. I don't know what will happen to Gandry, but because I accidentally read spoiler at wikipedia I can say that the Braavosi sword trainer of season one is a good hint for the location she will end up at.

Because English is my second language I get your idea, sometimes I have to backtrack a little in order to give me a second chance (and sometimes I need to, because I had a laugh and missed a few words). But I might just buy the DVDs to solve that, watching it on RTL when they start broadcasting the series is too inconvenient for me, as it will take time until they actually will (they have purchased the rights) and as I don't have a recorder I will be too limited to the broadcasting times that way.

I'm nearing the end of the 3rd book in the series. All I can say is this is by far the best screen adaption of a book that I have seen.

Bubblebee said it was "on the internet", so I checked usenet and it happened to be there. Shit generally is within an hour or two of it showing up virtually anywhere else in the world.

edit: but these aren't the same files as the other day, so I suspect that there is a furious cat and mouse game going on with DMCA notices buzzing around like flies at an all you can eat shit bar.
