Rather embarrassed to post this question.

Every time I login, there is a box saying "Remember me". I check it regularly, but it never remembers me. Usually when I check this kind of box, the next time I login, a panel comes up with my details on and all I have to do then is click "Login".

Why does GN not remember me, or am I doing something wrong ?

It's a setting in your web browser. Which one are you using?

Menu -> Settings -> Privacy Settings -> Remember form data and Menu -> Settings -> Security settings -> Remember passwords

    Also check

    Menu->Settings->Accept cookies

You need to enable cookies in your browser for that checkbox to work.
The first one of those is not necessary for the checkbox to work. I'll attempt to explain the difference:

    "Remember passwords" setting in browser:
This actually allows the browser to remember your password. The end result of this is that when you go to the login page, your information will be prefilled and you just click "login" or "submit".

    "remember me" checkbox on site:
This allows the website to store a cookie in the browser. The next time you visit the website, this cookie will be detected and you will automatically be logged in. This will continue until you either log out or clear the browser's cookies. Or if you don't visit the site for a very long time, then I think the cookie may expire.

edit: It sounds like Bald Eagle is checking the "remember me" box, but does not have cookies enabled, and is expecting the result of having the browser remember the password.

Thank you both for such a rapid reply. I am sure from what you say that it is a cookie matter and it is simple.

My browser is set to clear all session cookies on closure through the Chrome "Click & Clean" addon I have, so your cookie would be deleted. Hence when I return to GN on browser startup, the cookie is no longer there and I have to login as explained.

I never logout from GN during a browser session. Browser closure automatically shuts down all tabs.
My "Remember Passwords" and autofill works OK.

Only very important cookies are kept on browser closure. These are selected by me. I will see if I can add the GN cookies to the "kept" list.

I am very grateful to you both for taking the trouble to explain this issue and will see what I can do. Thanks.

Cookies make your browsing better, leave them on. Don't worry, they don't record the colour of your underpants.

Yup, you've got it. Add that cookie to the white-list and you'll be all set.
While I agree, I feel that I must correct you: It is possible for a cookie to record the color of your underpants if you provided that information in the necessary field; however, it is unlikely that this would happen.

My browser is set to delete everything except cookies on closure. I periodically manually clear the cookies knowing I'll have to sign in again everywhere.

Better idea: give your computer to me and buy a new one. :D
